  • 2. Taking Advantage Of Your Maternity Leave When it comes time to finally have that precious baby that you have been carrying for nine months, it is time to consider everything that you and that baby are going to need. The most important thing is time together and you will be able to legally receive that through maternity leave if you are a working mother.
  • 3. What Is Legally Even if you are unsure of whether or not you are going to return to the work force you should make sure that you are given what is legally yours according to the maternity leave laws that are in every state.
  • 4. Take advantage of the full amount of time your maternity leave Take advantage of the full amount of time that your employer gives you for your maternity leave. You never know what may come up and you will regret not taking advantage of the full maternity leave that you are entitled to. You want to make sure that you physically, mentally, and emotionally have enough time to get yourself pulled together and ready to head back to work. You do not want to do that before you are truly ready because you could end up missing more work in the long run if you do that.
  • 5. Signing Up For Leave Generally speaking, most employers expect that you notify them as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. This way, they will have ample time to figure out how to cover your position while you are gone and you can begin to get all of the paperwork together.
  • 6. There will probably be a few pages of paperwork There will probably be a few pages of paperwork that will need to be completed by you and by your doctor in order to get your maternity leave set up. Those papers also have to go through the human resource department usually for approval. Even though by law they have no choice but to allow you maternity leave, there is still a process that has to be followed.
  • 7. Exact Date That Your Maternity Leave Will Begin Although you probably will not know the exact date that your maternity leave will begin, you have to have everything in place so that when the time comes, everything can pull together smoothly. Most employers will not approve your maternity leave date to be any date prior to be admitted into the hospital for labor.
  • 8. Unless You Are Placed On Restriction And Bed Rest This is of course unless you are placed on restriction and placed on bed rest at which time your doctor can provide you with documentation to present your employer. This will mean you will either go on short term disability through your employer or maternity leave. Either way, you will get the paid time off that you deserve and have earned according to the law.
