  • BEFORE WE GET INTO THE PROGRAM I WANT TO PLAY A LITTLE GAME TO WARM US ALL UP. THE WAY IT WORKS ISTHIS, I’M GOING TO PUT A SLIDE UP AND SAY A WORD AND YOU ARE GOING TO FIND THE OBJECT THAT RELATES TO THAT WORD AND SHOUT IT OUT. HERE’S AND EXAMPLE IF I SAY THE WORD CANDY AND YOU SEE A CANDY CANE ON THE SLIDE YOU SHOUT IT OUT. GOT IT??

  • WHAT IS DISTRACTED DRIVING? ONE DEFINIATION IS; ANY ACTIVITY THAT TAKES YOUR ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE SAFE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN A DISTRACTED DRIVER? HOW MANY OF YOU THINK THAT YOU HAVE BEEN DISTRACTED AT SOME TIME?? IF YOU HAVE EVER PARTICIPATED IN ONE OR MORE OF THESE ACTIVITIES WHILE DRIVING A VEHICLE THEN YOU HAVE BEEN DISTRACTED. AND ONE LAST ON THAT I DIDN’T PUT UP ON THE SLIDE: HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN STOPPED FOR SPEEDING AND HAD FAILED TO SEE THE SPEED LIMIT SIGN??
  • BULLET #1 . READ BULLET #2. READ BULLET #3. READ ALSO MEANS MENTAL
  • VISUAL, TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD, OR BEING INVOLVE IN AN ACTIVITY THAT TAKES YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD. DIALING THE CELL PHONE OR LOOKING AT A TEXT MESSAGE TAKES YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD. NOTICE THE WOMANS EYES IN THE PICTURE. DOES SHE KNOW WHERE HER VEHICLE IS HEADED?
  • HOW ABOUT LOOKING AT A MAP AND TUNING A RADIO WHILE DRIVING, AGAIN A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A VISUAL DISTRACTION. AGAIN NOTICE IN THE PICTURE WHERE THE EYES ARE.
  • HERE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF MANUAL DISTRACTION, TAKING YOUR HANDS OFF THE WHEEL. DONUT IN ONE HAND, COFFEE IN THE OTHER AND TALKING ON THE PHONE, HOPEFULLY SHE DOESN’T CHOKE ON THE DONUT WHILE TALKING OR SHE’S REALLY GOING TO BE IN TROUBLE. SHE MUST HAVE LONGER FINGERS THEN I DO TO HOLD THE CUP AND GRIP THE WHEEL.
  • WHAT ABOUT THIS COOL DUDE, LOOK FAMILUAR? HE’S STEERING WITH HIS WRIST AND KNEE, HOPE HE DOESN’T HAVE TO TAKE EVASEAVE ACTION OR HIT A POT HOLE THAT THROWS THE VEHICLE IN THE OPPOSITE LANE. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT A COUPLE SHORT VEDIOS ON THE 3 RD TYPE OF DISTRACTION, COGNITIVE, TAKING YOUR MIND OFF WHAT YOU ARE DOING WHILE DRIVING.
  • BULLET #1 . OF COURSE THIS FIGURE COMES FROM THOSE CRASHES WHERE A DISTRACTION WAS ACTUALLY REPORTED. MOST POLICE REPORTS DON’T ACCURATELY REFLECT DISTRACTIONS. BUT AS A WHOLE POLICE ARE GETTING MUCH BETTER AT COLLECTING DISTRACTION DATA. BULLET #2,3. THESE FIGURES ARE ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ASSOCIATION, WHO ALSO SAYS THAT AT ANY GIVE TIME OF THE DAY 11% OF ALL THE DRIVERS ON THE ROADWAY ARE USING A CELL PHONE. BULLET #3. PART OF THE REASON FOR THIS IS THATMORE YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE CELL PHONES.
  • BULLET #1. IF YOU ARE USING A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING YOU ACTUALLY INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF BEING INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS CRASH BY 4 TIMES ACCORDING TO THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY. IF YOU TEXT AND DRIVE YOU INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF A CRASH BY 23 TIMES. IN ONE STUDY, DRIVERS WHO TEXTED WHILE DRIVING TOOK THEIR EYES OFF THE ROAD FOR AN AVERAGE OF 4.6 SECONDS. AT 55 MILES PER HOUR THIS EQUATES TO A DRIVER TRAVELING THE LENGTH OF A FOOTBALL FIELD WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE ROAD.. VIRGINIA TECH TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE- USING 200 PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVERS. BULLET #2. A STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH FOUND THAT DRIVING WHILE USING A CELL PHONE, WHETHER HAND-HELD OR HANDS-FREE, REDUCED A DRIVERS REACTIONS AS MUCH AS DRIVING WITH A BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION OF .08, IN OTHER WORDS YOU HAVE THE REACTION TIME OF A DRUNK DRIVER. BULLET #3 . WHY DO YOU THINK TEXTING WHILE DRIVE WOULD BE THE MOST DANGEROUS??? IT INVOLVES ALL 3 TYPES OF DISTRACTED DRIVING, VISUAL, EYES OFF THE ROAD. MANUAL, HAVE TO HAVE YOUR HANDS TO TEXT, AND CONGNITIVE, YOUR MIND IS DIRECTED TO THE KEY PAD AND WHAT YOU ARE TYPING.
  • BULLET #1. THIS STUDY, DONE BY CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY FOUND THAT USING A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING REDUCES THE BRAIN ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH DRIVING BY 37%. THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS THAT DIFFERENCE.
  • THE PICTURE ON THE LEFT SHOWS WHAT THE BRAIN ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH DRIVING ALONE WOULD BE LIKE, THE PICTURE ON THE RIGHT SHOWS WHAT THE BRAIN ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH DRIVING IS LIKE WHEN THE PARTICIPANT IS GIVEN A SENTENSE THROUGH A CELL PHONE AND ASKED TO JUDGE IT AS TRUE OR FALSE. BOTH PICTURES OF THE BRAIN ARE TAKEN USING AN MRI SCAN.
  • HERE SOME MORE GOOD REASONS FOR NOT USING A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING. THERE ARE 200 DIFFERENT EVENTS THAT TAKE PLACE PER MILE OF DRIVING, AND NO I’M NOT GOING TO LIST THEM ALL. YOU HAVE TO MAKE 40 DECISIONS PER MILE. DURING THAT SAME MILE THE AVERAGE DRIVER IS GOING TO MAKE AT LEAST 1 MISTAKE AND THAT SAME DRIVER IS GOING TO BE INVOLVLE IN A NEAR COLLISION EVERY 500 MILES OF DRIVING. SEEMS TO ME WE HAVE ENOUGH TO DO WHILE WE’RE DRIVING, YET WE WANT TO TALK ON THE PHONE OR TEXT AND HAVE MORE TO CONCENTRATE ON THEN JUST OUR DRIVING.
  • SO WHAT CAN WE DO.
  • THE EASIEST THING TO DO WOULD BE NOT TO TALK ON THE PHONE WHILE DRIVIGN. NEVER MULTI-TASK WHILE DRIVING. HOW MANY OF YOU ARE AWARE THAT MULTI-TASKING IS A MYTH?? STUDIES HAVE PROVEN THAT THE BRAIN CAN NOT DO TWO THINGS AT A TIME, IT CAN SWITCH VERY RAPIDLY BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT TASK, BUT CAN NOT DO THEM BOTH SIMOTANIOUSLY.
  • EMERGENCIE VEHICLES
  • OK WE’VE MENTIONED ALL THE OBVEOUS ONES. SO WHAT ABOUT WORK PLACE POLICIES??? GOOD IDEA OR BAD?? IF YOU ARE A BUSINESS OWNER I CAN’T TELL YOU WHAT TO DO. I CAN SUGGEST THAT IN THE LONG RUN YOU ARE GOING TO BE MONEY AHEAD IF YOU IMPLEMENT A NO CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING POLICY. THE REASON IS THAT EVENTUALLY ONE OF YOUR EMPLOYEES IS GOING TO CRASH WHILE TALKING ON THE PHONE AND THAT IS GOING TO COST YOU. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION????
