Presentation for Participation Works September 2008As we developed and delivered more and more courses we also developed a ‘formula’ or pattern to our training, and began to understand what was most effective in supporting groups of young people and adults.
Consequently we have been able to develop this into a clear process that if adopted has been proven to be a successful approach to supporting groups of young people to participate in communities and organisations.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008For the last 5 years of the programme an Apprentice Trainer scheme was developed to specifically support young volunteers to become skilled Trainers. As the programme grew there was an increasing demand from organisations to deliver training outside of the remit of the Young Movers programme. At this time we also began to design and deliver programmes for young adults (16 - 25yrs) and for practitioners working with young people.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008The Young Movers programme provided a range of training courses for 11-16 year olds targeted at groups from the most deprived areas of the UK and aiming to support young people to make a positive contribution to their communities. The programme ran for 7 years during which many young people returned to volunteer and help deliver the training.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008Not all of our training activities require specific resources - in fact we worked very hard to ensure that the majority of our training activities can be organised using a bare minimum of resources.
The most popular of these activities are detailed in our book. The book includes advice and ideas for effective facilitation of training activities and our approach to developing a youth participation strategy.

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008Being able to have effective meetings is an essential skill if projects are to be successful and one of our most popular training activities and resources is Dilemmas.
Dilemmas uses scenarios to allow participants to explore alternative approaches to how they make decisions and to become more aware of the actual processes of holding a meeting. This is another resource that was refined several times over a period of years with input from many volunteers and a few hundred participants.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008We recognised a need for adults to support young people to capitalise on the opportunities for personal development when involved in projects and activities, and Outline includes Personal Record Cards for each group member to support this important developmental opportunity.
Personal Record Cards include a self assessment that young people can use to graph their individual qualities and to monitor whether they think they make progress on these during a projects lifetime.2 years ago

the financial, time, people and resource implications each task will have.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008These are examples of two of our main resources:
Prospective, and
Outline
Prospective is usually used at the very start of the process with young people and aims to support young people to consider the needs and characteristics of a particular community, and to consider their own skills and qualities and then ultimately link these together so that participants can identify opportunities for them to use their own skills towards the needs of issues they have identified.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008We called the process ‘Prospective’ named after one of our main resources and meaning ‘looking to the future’.
The 6 stages of the Prospective process can be adapted in various ways although we have also ‘packaged’ them up into one sheet that called the ‘Prospective Sheet’.
The Prospective Sheet was revised several times over 4 years of development after originally bringing together a series of activity sheets that we carried out on different flipchart sheets.
Although important, we had long recognised that too much paperwork was offputting for many young people, therefore we developed the Prospective Sheet so that everything could be seen in one place and all members of a group could easily contribute to the different stages at any time.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008The process we use aims to enable young people to identify what they perceive to be the issues and opportunities in a community, so they can plan an activity or project towards addressing some of those issues.
The point of this is to allow young people and adults to work together on a joint activity/ project and then use this shared experience as a basis for developing effective working relationships and understandings that can be used to build on for future work together.2 years ago

Presentation for Participation Works September 2008Shortly after we began delivering training outside of the Young Movers programme we began to explore opportunities to travel to Africa and experience delivering training in a very different environment than we were used to in the UK.
Although our initial work in Tanzania was primarily for our own benefit we realised the work we had done had made a much bigger impact than we expected.
Over subsequent visits to Malawi we adopted a more focussed approach and worked particularly with a new project in the Zomba region
supporting orphan children.
This work inspired a new project set up by a local person in Zomba who uses sport to engage young people and then to provide them with the opportunity to gain a secondary education.
We have been providing support to the group leaders with practical ideas and we fundraise to pay for childrens school fees and related costs.2 years ago
