  • Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in United States and it has debilitating effects to the health and finances of America. American Diabetes Association (2012) presented data on the demographics of Americans afflicted with diabetes and the numbers are staggering. Obama’s new healthcare reform brings in the effort of prevention instead of treatment of disease, and promotion of diabetes prevention will be among the leading health issue.   • Normally , cells in the body need sugar as a source of energy. What happens is that the digestive system breaks down the carbohydrates into simple sugars such as glucose, which travel into and through the bloodstream to nourish and energize cells. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in the adult years, although it, too, can appear at any age. This is the most common form of the disease and is closely correlated with the obesity epidemic. In this form the cause is usually a problem in the way the body responds to insulin. It usually develops gradually and usually a result of poor lifestyle choices in people who are genetically susceptible (Yerkovich, 2011).ReferenceYerkovich, S. (2011).   • In type 2 diabetes, cells of the body become less responsive to insulin (a hormone produced by pancreas), which in turn causes the body to secrete more insulin to maintain normal metabolism. The pancreas usually rallies to compensate for the resistance by pumping out more insulin. For most people with insulin resistance, blood sugar levels stay within a normal range. But for some, the insulin-producing cells eventually fail to keep up with the increased demand. Blood sugar levels rise, resulting in diabetes. It is not cost-effective, misses some people who do have diabetes and worries others who do not. According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, you need to do two types of physical activity each week to improve your health–aerobic and muscle-strengthening (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Moderate intensity aerobics can be brisk walking and swimming. Vigorous intensity aerobics can be jogging and running.
