  1. 1. People of the Screen* Mary Lou Jepsen Pixel Qi Corporation Books in Browsers, Internet Archive, San Francisco, 2011 www.pixelqi.com *A phrase describing us, today, by Kevin Kelly : From the Books in Browsers Conference, Internet Archive, San Francisco October 28 201111/8/2011 1
  2. 2. The future of reading is screens The future of screens is reading11/8/2011
  3. 3. Long Form Reading Needs Better Screens 64-90% of users after prolonged screen use experience: (multiple studies) Blurred Vision Headaches Dry Eye Ocular Discomfort Eye strain Double Vision Why: what are the main reasons? Contrast Ratio Type of screen Lighting/Glare Resolution (Environment) Layout - interactivity First text from Rosenfield, 2011: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21480937 Second, italicized text from http://www.eyeprotectorpro.com/rsirepetitive-strain-injury-explained-eyeprotectorpro/www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 3

  5. 5. How our eyes scan a page Paper Screenwww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 5
  6. 6. 50% of all webpages are viewed for less than 10 seconds 25% of all webpages are viewed for less than 4 secondswww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 6
  7. 7. How we Read… Fast and Slow Average reading time for 10+ page academic paper – Printed paper: (slow, careful reading) • 22-45 minutes (Academics, over all disciplines) – On line: (mostly scanning despite claims) • 74 seconds (Academics, all disciplines) • 100 seconds (Students, all disciplines) • 55 seconds (Academics, computer science field) Desirable: Scanning and long-form reading on same screen! (without eyestrain) from: http://www.slideshare.net/randyconnolly/whats-wrong-with-online-readingwww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 7
  8. 8. Readability and ResolutionDoubling resolution boostsreading speed by at least 50% 250 ppi/8bitComparative resolutions 200ppi/8bit – Pixel Qi screen: Up to 300 ppi/8 bit in greyscale (BW mode) 150 ppi/8bit – Electrophoretics ~166 ppi/4 bit 100 ppi – Standard 10” LCD /8bit ~75dpi/8bit -------- – Paper ~600-1200-2400 ppi/1bit ( ~effective >>300ppi at 8bit for text because of halftoning, other differences in print tech.)www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 8
  9. 9. And it gets worse in Chinesewww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 9
  10. 10. Margins: printed paper books 50% Typical printed paper book 100% 50% The text here fails to use 86% of the screen real estate…. A plea …. please do better!www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 10
  11. 11. Readability: contrast Pixel Qi • Contrast ratios HIGH CONTRAST (higher is better) LOW • character size CONTRAST (larger is better) • Both impact text search speed (and reading speed) Einkwww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 11
  12. 12. • There are plenty of studies that show no difference between the legibility of serif and sans serif typefaces ( Tinker, 1932 ; Zachrisson, 1965 ; Bernard et al., 2001 ; Tullis et al., 1995 ; De Lange et al., 1993 ; Moriarty & Scheiner, 1984 ; Poulton, 1965 ; Coghill, 1980) ). • There are some high profile studies which claim to show the superiority of serif typefaces ( Robinson et al., 1983 ; Burt, 1959 ; Weildon, 1995 ) but these have been soundly criticized on points of methodology. ( Lund, 1997, 1998, 1999 ).www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 12
  13. 13. Most Important Low Eyestrain Reading: A well lighted place with a glare free screen 1. Glare*: causes eyestrain – shiny screens are bad for reading 2. Turn on the Lights*: light around the screen should approximate the brightness of the screen, or eyestrain also results * From, for example: The Legibility of Print by Miles Tinker (an out of print book that is perhaps best comprehensive study of legibility of print – called “Hygienic Vision”) In Other Words: you should have the lights on when working on your device, but that creates glare on most devices which also results in eyestrain.www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 13
  14. 14. Pixel Qi is the only computer screen that gives glare free reading in well lighted places The glare makes all but the Pixel Qi screen unreadableNo ‘Photoshop’or other imagemanipulationsoftware ortechniques havebeen used. Pixel Qi Screen Matte Screen (AG) Glare Screen Visibility Excellent Low, hard to read Low, hard to read Power Low High (5X higher than PQ High (5X higher than PQ) Well lighted places are the best for reading, but only the Pixel Qi screen is comfortably readable in such an environment. www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 14
  15. 15. Rapid adoption of new display technologies? Src: Displaysearchwww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 15
  16. 16. Another Way: One Laptop per Child Development: 6 months (screen) Shipped: >3M units New Functionalities: – sunlight readable – high resolution – low power – screen enables low power management system – In lowest cost, lowest power, greenest laptop ever madewww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 16
  17. 17. Pixel Qi: Delivering epaper with color and videowww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 11/8/2011 17
  18. 18. An example, real, Pixel Qi screen user “One of the worst problems I was having with my old screen was dry eyes. It was getting so bad that I was having to use eye drops every 20 minutes. Also I was waking up several times at night and having to use eye drops. Since using the PixelQi the problem is 80% better. The other problem was that my eyes were getting really sore from the glare of my conventional screen. This has stopped” A Happy Pixel Qi Screen User.www.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 18
  19. 19. Screens drains batteries quickly, …. but not Pixel Qi screens 3.5” Cell Phone Tablet with 10” Pixel Qi screen Display = 45% of battery usage Display = 2% of battery usage Pixel Qi – even at 8X the screen area, consumes 20x lower system powerwww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 19
  20. 20. iPad and Pixel Qi – in Sunlight Conclusion: iPad fails - Only the Pixel Qi screen can be seenwww.pixelqi.com 11/8/2011 20
