Precipitation This is the moisture in the atmosphere. E.g. Rain, hail, sleet, snow or fog. It is created when water vapour in an air mass condenses. This occurs when an air mass rises which causes the air to cool.

Convectional Rainfall Occurs when air is forced to rise by heating. E.g. towards the end of hot days when air is forced to rise by heat from the ground surface. Thunderstorms and dark clouds often occur. Copy fig 2.17 from page 38

Frontal or Cyclonic rain Occurs when warm air meets cold, and one is forced to rise over another. Usually the lighter warm air rises. It expands and cools and the water condenses, causing clouds and rain. The boundary between warm and cold aid is known as a front. Copy fig 2.18
