3. 3. Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! 21 st Century teaching & learning environment Netbooks = affordable + portable + digital

What resources do you want students to access on netbooks? What resources do you not want them to access?

Will students need to access these resources on or off campus?

If students are going to use netbooks extensively off campus, will they need to meet online with teachers or other students?

 4. 4.

Types of resources

Online learning systems (such as Moodle or Blackboard)

Digital textbooks/digital resources supplied by textbook publishers

Internet research resources

Authoring tools for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, audio, and video

Communications applications such as email

Social networking applications

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! 21 st Century teaching & learning environment
 5. 5.

Aren’t students accessing all of these already? What makes this 21 st Century teaching & learning?

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! 21 st Century teaching & learning environment

 7. 7.

How can netbooks allow students to have their own space?

Creating : Examples, videos, research projects, diagrams, poetry, music, dance

Evaluating : peer editing, reflections after projects, testing

Analysing : finding key points, differentiating from other work, sorting, categorizing

Applying : writing, speaking, exercises

Understanding : Writing, discussing, responding, summarizing

Remembering : Repetition, creating materials as study aids, exercises

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! different student learning styles Taken from Andrew Church Bloom’s Taxonomy Digital http://edorigami.wikispaces.com/Bloom's+Digital+Taxonomy
 8. 8.

School site based students - Allow time to process material while being linked to learning resources

Home/hospital based students - Connect them more significantly to school based resources, or other home/hospital based students

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! different student learning styles
 9. 9. Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! synchronous learning options

We are currently using AT&T Connect, which is available for licensing at your district

Up to 200 participants

Audio either through telephone or computer

Option to record

 10. 10.

Hold classes, group sessions, study halls in which students learn in a more traditional synchronous manner.

Orient student to specific goals at the same time

Offer staff support in technology and professional learning communities

Hold meetings/classes when campuses are closed

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! synchronous learning options Marine life in our bay
 11. 11.

Share presenter rights with students

Mute the audience as a whole when instruction requires

Poll/survey participants

Take Q&A in text, or allow students to question freely

Break out sessions available

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! synchronous learning options Response to Literature: The Good Earth

What is the number of troops currently in Afghanistan?

30,000

50.00

100,00

 12. 12.

There are two components priced:

Audio-per minute

Web- either per minute or a flat rate of $15 per account. Accounts are needed for all presenters. Attendees are not required to have accounts and can log in to the web interface.

There are no charges for audio if all audio is done on the computer (plugging a microphone in for the presenter to use, with audio coming out of speakers). Students would also not be tying up home/hospital phone lines.

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! synchronous learning options
 13. 13.

Students can use netbooks on school networks by plugging in to the network or using wifi access.

If students need access off campus, there are several options:

Plugging in to their home network (wired or wifi)

Accessing the internet at a library, community center, or other business (wired or wifi)

Accessing wireless broadband through a services provider like AT&T. A SIM is inserted into the netbook to access this service

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! digital divide
 14. 14.

If your school is looking at a netbook solution without wireless broadband, there is no need to go through a service provider like AT&T.

To provide home Internet access to students who would not normally have home internet access, the cost of that access needs to be built into the total cost of the project.

Why wireless broadband with internet access?

This solution can be deployed quickly

This solution continues to work for students with multiple residences (joint custody, etc.) and students that move more frequently

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! digital divide
 15. 15. Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! digital divide
 16. 16.

General cost structure estimates for netbook with monthly wireless broadband (Internet)

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! digital divide *200MG of data per month. Solutions using APN and other technologies will add to monthly costs Cost of Netbook Cost estimate of Monthly Wireless Broadband Full price Netbook $500 $40*
 17. 17.

The cost of wireless broadband will possibly limit the number of students receiving home access provided by the school district. Here are some students that are being targeted in pilot studies:

Hospital/homebound students

Virtual school students

At risk populations that have demonstrated desire to succeed (increased school attendance, improvement in grades, participation in special after-school programs)

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! digital divide
 18. 18.

Some districts have voiced concern about giving K12 students unlimited Internet access at home. The solution provided by AT&T can either route the netbook broadband wireless/Internet access to the school network (which is already filtered to community standards) or to another filtered Internet solution.

Options are also available to have email accounts provided to students with options to filter for offensive language and block email from outsiders.

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students! Filtered Internet Access and email
 19. 19.

The AT&T Netbook solution can be deployed to minimize impact to district IT departments

The netbook image/applications loaded can be coordinated with district but deployed by AT&T

If the district network is currently at capacity, the AT&T solution can provide other filtered Internet/email options

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students!
 20. 20.

Part of the planning:

What standards for student behavior will the district set in regard to netbook use on and off campus?

Will teachers have time to build the virtual space needed for these types of programs to have an impact on student learning? Can some of this happen at a district level?

What type of tech support will be needed for students using these netbooks on campus and at home? Is there a student training program included by the netbook manufacturer?

Create a Virtual Classroom Space for your Students!
