3. 3. Research Questions

It is said that BFM is costly, but friendly - how could you comment on the topic? (Q1: Costly but Friendly)

Why do you think students don’t see perspective in the studying process? (Q2: Low sense of perspective)

Students don’t know what is appreciated in their work/ assignments. Do you see the problem? (Q3: Appreciation of student work)

BFM general information has lack in flow. Has this effected your work or studies? (Q4: Lack of information is affective)

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the information flow? (Q5: Improving information flow)

6. The internal atmosphere is evaluated good in BFM, while the management is considered weak. Students don’t feel as valuable members of the organisation. How would you improve it? (Q6: Organisational improvements)

 4. 4. Q1: Costly but Friendly

Media

Price is higher than other schools “I think when people really want to study here, they will find the additional 10 000 or 15 000 kroons” (M-PR)

Feels overpaid

“ Overall this amount of money should pay for more quality education and more competent teachers” (4th year M-PR)

PR doesn’t need expensive equipment, but still on the same level in price

“ But for PR-students, we don’t actually get to use those things. So either get the PR-students more involved in the camera work, or just let the PR people pay a little bit less..” (M-PR)

Film

Film students find the fee expensive but agree they get what they are paying for

“ ... making video and film is costly ” (Film MA)

“ Just today we had lecture with prof Sillart, he mentioned that BFM is the cheapest place to study film in Europe” (1st year student)

Friendliness isn’t variable by field of study - 4 students find BFM and its staff very friendly, others find BFM neutral and some of the staff hard to get in touch with “... most of the teachers are authorities in their own way, so usually it is quite hard to make very good relationships with the teaching st aff.” (AV 4th year)

 5. 5. Q2: Low sense of perspective

Media

Too high expectations

“ People have said that after finishing this school and starting work (PR), they have learned more in few weeks that in the three years in BFM” (M-PR)

No previous work experience and understanding about the profession

False goals and not best reputation of BFM

“ Many students want only the paper and they really don’t care what’s on the paper.. Especially PR, that only rich kids who don’t get into other schools come to BFM” (M-PR)

Studies in BFM don’t give privelegs on labour market later (Estonia)

Film

Hard to see connections between theoretical studies and practical work

“ What I have felt in this school is that we do a lot of stuff, but I really don’t see why do we do that or how can we use it later” (MA student)

It’s not a problem for film students

“ Everything is possible in BFM, but no one will bring everything to you on silver-plate” (3rd year student)

“ I would say that I see great motivation!” (1st year student)

 6. 6. Q3: Appreciation of student works

Most respondents didn’t see big problem

“ I don’t see a problem in this. Because generally you are given a syllabus where it is stated what you need to achive during the course and what is more important” (M-PR)

“ If I just lay around and do nothing then of course I get no appreciation for my work. University is not the place where the teacher holds you like a baby so you have to do everything yourselves.” (Film 1st year student)

Some issues were noted – unclear requirements for assignments, lack of feedback and uncertainty about what is evaluated

“ In some situations it is true, because there are some teachers, that grading you with a very strange system. Moreover, usually you do not have any feedback about your works: you got the grade, and the end of the story.” (Media-PR)

No gap between Film and Media department student’s opinions at this particular topic

 7. 7. Q4: Lack of information is affective

Media

Problems with time planning, especially for 1st year students

Late information about canceled classes

“ Info doesn’t reach in normal way. Students find out that there is no class just minutes before” (M-PR)

Language barrier – part of the information is available only in Estonian

Conspiracy impression

“ Also seems like most of stuff is kept in secret, or the information is not given to students..” (M-PR)

Film

No problems with general information

“ We have the FB page and the course inside mailing list. So information moves around pretty fast” (1st year student)

Some problems with specific information about equipment

Rumors

“ Yeah, most of information in BFM I get is I hear from rumors” (MA student)
