1.5 hours a day posting to blog (Sue Jennings)
No problem finding material to post about – trick is to get balance right in terms of meeting needs of all users
Wordpress statistics are very useful – can see what is most popular – static pages very popular
Statistics also show search terms people have used to get to blog
Key advantage of blog over normal web site – when Sue sees an article/research she knows people in Trust will be interested in she can blog it immediately

Blog is a virtual filing system
Has saved her 10 years of work in terms of promoting her service, raising awareness – she is now well known in Trust
Email bulletin 2 or 3 times a month – digest of blog posts
Bulletin links back to blog
No previous experience of blogging/web – “if you can wordprocess you can write a blog” – perhaps get some help with setting it up then you’re off

Wordpress usage stats helped in getting IT to allow email bulletin to be sent out
“ you (IT) allow people to access Google but not a useful blog” “when I show them my blog is reinforcing evidence-based practice then they have to back down” “once they see it they’re impressed and you have the stats to show it’s being used”
It costs £0 to run the blog!

Sue’s Advice Summary
Blogging gets you out of rut
Makes you feel you are making a difference
Start off small and get a feel for it, perhaps keep the blog private to start with
Big benefit is that after a while you have built up a large archive of useful material
The positive feedback is very encouraging - sometimes get gifts or chocolate and wine!!

AOSEC - M De Saulles - April 2010 Sarah - Twitter is an excellent tool for professional networking, I’ve built many contacts as a result of following other professionals, and a great way to find them is by seeing who is using a conference/event hash tag that you are interested in and look at their biogs and then follow if they seem interesting or share common interests. Emma - Agreed. Particularly for us as fairly new professionals, there are LOTS of us out there and Twitter is a great way to connect with them as well as established professionals. There are ever such a lot of library/info people on Twitter across the world and putting a question out there to find out what others are doing with self service for example or upgrading library catalogues etc. Also as we are working towards chartership it’s a good way to see who is doing what and up to where. AOSEC - M De Saulles - April 2010 Sarah - If you write a blog then promote it through other social media sites such as your Facebook profile, and Twitter as if people like it they can easily ‘retweet’ about it or share the link. Emma - Learning by doing is the best way. When Sarah and I started our blog our motivation was to keep track of the stuff we’d be involved in as evidence for our chartership because of the reflective nature of the process. We also thought it would encourage us to be reflective and see what we had taken from workshops or sessions etc and used or not in our jobs. I didn’t really think that people would be interested in reading what we’ve been up to, but it seems they are! You’ll see from comments on the blog that people do engage with what we write about. AOSEC - M De Saulles - April 2010 Sarah - Knowing about how web 2 works puts you at an advantage even if you don’t personally have a Facebook profile or a Twitter feed. I think it’s really useful to have a working knowledge of these sites as so many organisations are involved and this could be helpful when applying for new jobs if you can demonstrate knowledge and awareness. If you give it a try and change your mind you can always delete your profile. Emma - Yep, give it a try! The only other thing I’d say is to try and incorporate it into your routine. It’s sometimes difficult to post regularly on a blog or maintain a presence on Twitter, but if you can allocate yourself a bit of time each week for blogging and each day for Twitter maybe then you’re set. You’ll see from our blog that we haven’t been able to maintain that even between the two of us, but we do try. Web 2.0
