Regular short one-to-ones with staff eg monthly or 6-weekly. Rule of appraisals: „no surprises‟. Eg “Tell me about your achievements over the last month and how this fits in with the business goals…. Tell me about your priorities for the next month and how this fits in with your yearly objectives…. Are there any obstacles and if so, what do you plan to do to address these?...” Use appraisal process (see the 80/20 Challenge appraisal form for reference) Yearly Appraisal. Address non-performance quickly, using a „non-personal‟ feedback process. Don‟t wait for appraisals to praise or reprimand!
