Mannino and Marta Mills organized the event. By Marta Mills, marketing editor, Baltimore In November and December, food banks receive a steady flow of donations to help the hungry put a holiday meal on the table. But following the holidays amid the coldest days of winter, the shelves of many food pantries go bare while the need remains. Responding to this reality, the Baltimore office organized a food drive in February. Organizers set up a “grocery store shelf” in the reception area and encouraged each employee to bring in at least one item to fill the shelves – with the goal of gathering 120 items. Little did they know they would be clearing the shelves several times to accommodate the nearly 300 items donated. The food drive resulted in nine boxes of food for the Maryland Food Bank, which distributed nearly 19 million pounds of food last year. The organization saw a 30% to 50% increase in demand for services last year as a result of the economic recession.Dialogue
