Newton Security Company Background
Newton Security Inc. is a privately owned company delivering the highest technology solutions that address today's security needs. It is the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of three-dimensional machine vision, single person detection systems.
The company was founded in 2002 to specifically develop a reliable solution to the tedious and often manpower-intensive problem of stopping tailgating and piggybacking at secure facilities.
Today our systems are in use around the world at airports, government buildings, data centres, research laboratories, financial concerns, power plants, manufacturing sites, unmanned immigration and virtually every other category of secure areas.
Many of the Newton Security products and technologies were developed at its affiliated company, Newton Research Labs, a leader in the development and manufacturing of optical automation, optical tracking, machine vision and robotics. Newton Labs is a spin-off from the famous Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), where much of the stereo three-dimensional vision now in use world-wide, was originally developed.

Definitions
What is piggybacking?
Piggybacking refers to when a person tags along with another person who is authorized to gain entry into a restricted area, or pass a certain checkpoint. The act may be legal or illegal, authorized or unauthorized, depending on the circumstances
Typically, the first person gains authorization through an access control system ID card, biometric fingerprint/hand print, facial or similar device.
Once the door has been opened any number of people can pass through the door unless preventative measures have been taken such as having guards on duty or an automated system that can detect and prevent unauthorized access through “piggybacking/tailgating”.
Is tailgating the same as piggybacking?
The difference between the two terms is that piggybacking implies that the person who has opened the door with their credentials knows that others are following them in through the secure door.
Tailgating means that others are entering or exiting through the door without the knowledge of the person who has opened the door.

What is a Mantrap?
A mantrap is a secured space equipped with two or more interlocking doors and a single person detection system to ensure that only one person can pass through into a high security area such as a data center, research lab, cash rooms etc.
A standard mantrap, or security vestibule, has one door in the public area and another door to the secure area. Between the doors are an access control reader on the wall and the T-DAR stereo vision camera on the ceiling.
The physical size of a mantrap area can be as small as 5 ft. (152cm) x 5 ft. (152cm) and may be considerably larger.
What are interlocking doors?
Interlocking doors have electro-mechanical locks and are interconnected through the T-DAR system which allows only one door at any time to be open.
Only when the access control reader in the mantrap validates the passage and the system detects only one person in the mantrap, is access granted and the system locks the public-side door and unlocks the secure-side door, allowing the person into the secure area.
When any one door is open, all other doors of the mantrap system are automatically locked.

Newton’s T-DAR ® Solution
Newton’s patented T-DAR system uses sophisticated, three-dimensional optical imaging to detect piggybacking and tailgating through doors or mantraps.
The Newton T-DAR system detects persons and differentiates them from carts or other objects in or around the secure side of the door or Mantrap and then utilities Newton's sophisticated stereo machine vision technology to identify and tag any person within the field of view of the tracking (overhead) camera.
It maintains that tag on that person so long as he or she (or some portion of the person) remains in the view of the camera.
That information is then combined with the data provided by the access device, door contacts and other input data to determine if the tagged person is in legal transit or is a tailgating or piggybacking violation.
Once the status of a person is determined to not be a legal transit but to be tailgating or piggybacking, the T-DAR system then actuates any number of possible results, all controlled and pre-selected during the commissioning process for inclusion into the easy-to-use operator interface.

Newton’s T-DAR ® Solution - Continued
These alarms range from local alert sirens, flashing lights and voice annunciation through remote alarm, real-time delivery of video of the event to security forces, activation of internal or existing DVR systems and physical events such as the locking of other doors to prevent the intruder from further penetrating the secure area.
When the T-DAR system is used in conjunction with physical barriers such as single or double doors, mantraps and security revolving doors, the system can prevent tailgating and piggybacking, as well as detecting and alarming on those occurrences.

Integration Scope
The T-DAR system is specifically designed as a stand alone system for easy integration into any access control system.
The T-DAR system requires only a single digital signal, typically a dry contact, from the access control system to communicate authorization of a person.
The T-DAR outputs are also dry contacts, with up to three outputs (dry contacts) for alarms and warnings.
Typically two outputs are used: one to the access control system for the alarm and one to the DVR/NVR system to record the event.
The annunciator/light/voice local alarm system is directly controlled and connected to the T-DAR controller with a standard CAT5 connection. In addition, the T-DAR controller accepts various optional inputs from the access control system or other devices for by-passes, over-rides, special configurations etc.; all of these various options are simply configured via the user interface.

Newton Offers Two Basic Systems
Single and Double Door System
Consists of a single or double door entryway that has some form of electronic locking mechanism.
The T-DAR system requires only one stereo camera-head per door.
Alarms outputs alert security when piggybacking or tailgating violations occur.
T-DAR will alarm (and record) when multiple people pass through entryway.
The operation of a single door and double door system are similar.
Mantrap System
Utilizes a public and secure door room or corridor, that has some form of electronic locking mechanism to maintain single person entry.
The mantrap will require multiple camera-heads, depending on its physical size to ensure full coverage.
T-DAR unit controls door locks keeping one door locked at all times.
Physically stops tailgating and piggybacking.
T-DAR will alarm when multiple people occupy the mantrap ensuring that the secure door remains locked, maintaining the security integrity of the protected area.

Typical T-DAR ® Door Installation
The door requires an electro-mechanical lock and door contact switch, working in concert with an access control system.
The T-DAR stereo cameras are mounted in the ceiling (secure side).
T-DAR will monitor people passing through the door provided a validation signal has been received from the access control system.
The T-DAR system will alarm should multiple people pass through from public area to secure area without validation signals from the access control system.
The system may also be configured as by-directional with the addition of a stereo camera mounted in the ceiling (public side)

What happens when the Mantrap alarms goes off?
All doors on the secure side of man trap will remained locked. Access will not be granted to a card holder or through a biometric read, etc. until the mantrap has been cleared.
An adjustable volume audible alarm warning message is played along with a flashing light, both typically located in the mantrap.
The mantrap must be cleared before proceeding with further attempts to access the secure facility. Security personnel will receive notification of the alarm and can determine if further action is required, dispatch guards, reprimand employees, etc.
Video from the T-DAR system and the access control system may be viewed by security personnel to gather the facts of who was in mantrap at time of alarm, where they are now, and where they have been in facility.

General Information
Internationalization
T-DAR is primarily sold with English as the major language for both the user interface and documentation. It is also available in Japanese. Other languages available at additional cost. The annunciator (voice warning system) is often required in different languages; and/or different articulation for various countries. The voice system is easily field- programmable in any language or enunciation and is often supplied with various voices for particular countries.
Testing and Deployment
Prior to introduction, T-DAR system had over one year of beta testing and quality assurance testing. The system has been deployed for more than eight years into many different security environments. The T-DAR system is UL and CE certified and has met and exceeded the QC requirements for the various United States government and other governmental bodies who have deployed the system.
Patent
(US Patent No. 7,382,895). This patent covers all usage of stereo 3-D vision for the security industry allowing the detection and classification (authorized or unauthorized) of persons transiting an area. Thus it covers alarming for tailgating, prevention of tailgating by the use of a vestibule and an inlet and an outlet door (commonly know as mantraps), security revolving doors, automatic immigration gates that are deployed world wide and any other usage of stereo 3-D vision for single person detection.

How Long is the Transit Time Through a Mantrap?
A number of variables come into this calculation:
The type of access control system used.
The number of card readers.
Physical size of the mantrap.
Whether carts or baggage are being taken through.
Walking speed of user etc
Whether it is a single or double door configuration.
Manual or motorized doors

Other Detection Systems
Break Beam
Break-beam systems require visual separation between people to function. They cannot differentiate between a large person and two people hugging or “piggybacking”. While they are one of the least expensive “anti-tailgating” systems available they are also relatively ineffective.
What about video analytics?
Just like break-beam systems, video analytics also require visual separation between people to function. Video analytics will usually catch innocent intruders, but will not stop a serious intruder that understands how to beat the system.

The T-DAR system reliably detects and prevents tailgating and piggybacking through secure doors which significantly increases the effectiveness of an access control system. Our patented three-dimensional machine vision system is much more effective than competitive technologies currently available, such as video analytics, break-beam systems, pressure mats and etc. In many instances, the T-DAR system has been used to automate the tedious and often manpower intensive problem of preventing tailgating and piggybacking at secure facilities.
