Our Class Routines <ul><li>Children arrive and take out their book and homework (please remember book bags!), </li></ul><ul><li>10 minute activity, </li></ul><ul><li>Day begins, </li></ul><ul><li>Register, </li></ul><ul><li>Mrs. McDermott’s group, </li></ul><ul><li>Playtime, </li></ul><ul><li>Phonics group, </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Back to class to continue with literacy/numeracy, </li></ul><ul><li>Children are walked down to get their lunchboxes and wash their hands, </li></ul><ul><li>Cross-curricular subjects, </li></ul><ul><li>Playtime, </li></ul><ul><li>Finish the day off with a story, circle time, show and tell, Golden Child, Courteous Bear and giving out books. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Phonics <ul><li>Phonics is taught daily for around 20 – 30 minutes, </li></ul><ul><li>Sessions are differentiated for your child’s ability, </li></ul><ul><li>Research now shows that high quality phonic work is essential to improving the teaching of early reading and writing. </li></ul>

Some Key Vocabulary <ul><li>Phoneme: Is the smallest sound that you can hear. </li></ul><ul><li>Grapheme: Is how the phoneme is written. </li></ul><ul><li>Diagraph: A phoneme with 2 letters e.g. ay </li></ul><ul><li>Segmentation: The process of sounding out a word to spell (robot arms). </li></ul><ul><li>Blending: Squeezing sounds together to read a word. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>There are 44 sounds in the English language e.g. ai, ee & igh. </li></ul><ul><li>There are many more graphemes. </li></ul><ul><li>High Frequency words and Tricky words. </li></ul><ul><li>Children practise spelling CVC and CCVC words. </li></ul><ul><li>Different pronunciations for graphemes e.g. ‘ow’ cow and throw </li></ul><ul><li>Same sound different grapheme. </li></ul>

What can you do <ul><li>Flash card your phoneme cards, </li></ul><ul><li>Make sure your child knows the letter names too, </li></ul><ul><li>Practise segmenting words with your robot arms, </li></ul><ul><li>Use your sound cards to build words, </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage your child to sound out decodable words, </li></ul><ul><li>Practise reading and spelling tricky words, </li></ul>

Some Maths Tips <ul><li>Count in 2s, 5s & 10s forwards and backwards, </li></ul><ul><li>Say what each digit means in a 2-digit number, </li></ul><ul><li>Round numbers to the nearest 10, </li></ul><ul><li>Say if a number is odd or even, </li></ul><ul><li>Can add or subtract a 1 and 2-digit number to any 2-digit number. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Maths Strategies <ul><li>Counting on and back using a number line and 100 square. </li></ul><ul><li>Adding and subtracting using PV apparatus. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Learning Made Fun <ul><li>Sing songs on the guitar, </li></ul><ul><li>Play run around games, </li></ul><ul><li>Use ICT, </li></ul><ul><li>Team and pair games, </li></ul><ul><li>Make up actions and rhymes, </li></ul><ul><li>Hands on, </li></ul><ul><li>Use drama and role play. </li></ul>

Golden Time <ul><li>Is a behaviour system based on reward, </li></ul><ul><li>Children receive 30 minutes golden time, </li></ul><ul><li>If they keep all their Golden Rules they keep all their Golden Time, </li></ul><ul><li>Children choose e.g. Tea and biscuits in the staffroom, the park, table tennis, Wii sports, art and craft, field games, parachute games, picnic, fancy dress party, cinema, 2W’s Got Talent… </li></ul>
