Users of Scholarship Technology uostech - A Community Approach - Presentation Transcript

  1. Users of Scholarship Technology (uostech) – A Community Approach Mark Morley & Dr. Jamie Wood
  2. Introduction
      • Demonstrate the uostech environment
      • Rationale and community philosophy
      • Research to be undertaken
      • Potential uses for others

  3. Rationale
      • Technologists
      • Academics
      • Partnership
        • Cross-fertilization

  4. ‘ Users of Scholarship Technology’ conceived: … as a network community to advance useful scholarship technology; it’s about acquiring skills, sharing knowledge, building and being part of a community of practice for learning, teaching and research. Mark Morley, 2008

  8. Inquiry approach The inquiry approach to teaching and learning (also know as inquiry- or enquiry-based learning) describes a process of learning in which students are faced with open ended questions, often of their own devising, which encourage then to engage in research like activities.
  9. The roles of researcher, teacher, and learner are blurred as individuals assume different roles at different times. A community comes together, mediated by the technology to investigate, via inquiry and experimentation, uses and applications of the technology. We're working to develop a lightweight framework environment for this community of inquiry to research the potential of 'mashup', adapting of, and 'piggy-backing' on Web 2.0 tools.
  10. Grassroots vs. 'Off the shelf'
      • Achieve requirements
      • Experiment in isolation
      • Perpetual public beta testing
      • Others adopt and adapt
      • Rapidly adapt to change

  11. Content mashup
      • Parallels mashup of technology
      • Pull in content via RSS into portal
      • Branding over usability

  12.
  13. Comparison Table
  14.
  15.
  16.
  17. Future
      • Increase content
      • Increase user population
      • Critical Mass

  18. Limitations
      • Multiple logon to different services
        • Open ID
      • Administrator centric

  19. Justification We believe it was appropriate to start experimenting to develop the adaptable approach and propel us up the implementation learning curve ready for future developments (even though there are current limitations). As Martin Weller says, "... we need to get used to a continual stream of tools we love for a few months ..." http://nogoodreason.typepad.co.uk/no_good_reason/2008/01/the-facebook-le.html last accessed on 11/06/08 14:36
  20. Supporting Research
      • Student & Staff
      • Use of technologies
      • SoLT&R
