Over the past 20 years, I’ve been in hiring roles and have received thousands of resumes from new college graduates. I’ve interviewed many for real jobs and done my share of informational interviews. Sometimes I’ve hired people into entry-level positions. More often though, I haven’t.

Those who did not get the job were sometimes just not the right fit. Other times, they were trumped by a more impressive candidate or victim to some other random event mostly out of their control.

Too many had the background to make the cut or at least garner a second interview. But disastrous interviewing skills brought you down.

Here are my top reasons why I will never hire you.

  • AndreaSkimbo Andrea Skimbo Your information was spot on, and I enjoyed your interesting artwork and approach to sharing this information. Here at Oklahoma State University we also spend a lot of time teaching students the same information shared in your 11 points through one on one appointments, workshops and career classes. While I can’t speak for the quality and effort of all university career services departments, I can say your slide deplicting career services staff was offensive to me. How does that graphic at all represent the purpose or actions of a career services office?

Speaking from a career services perspective, it is rarely the fault of our department that this type of information is not learned by students, but more often the result of students who never take advantage of using our services and staff for career assistance. Despite extensive marketing of our services and readily available staff, some students simply choose not to engage our office. I believe that those who do interact with us learn the same tips you discussed in your article (and often more) which build key skills and leads to successful interviews and job searches. Our department is staffed by highly educated and trained individuals, most of which have completed a Master’s degree and/or Global Career Development Facilitator Training. There is no mandatory career services visit before graduation, no required appointments with our staff, that choice is up to the student to pursue. Though we strongly encourage students to meet with our office, spend a great deal of time on marketing our services and focus on outreach to all our students, there will always be graduates who lack basic career knowledge because they never took the time to seek help. I feel it is unfair to blame career services offices, but instead encourage you to see this as a student’s responsibility.

  • isakarinaromualdez Isabelle Romualdez, Intern at Draftfcb Manila I'm a fresh-grad and my resume is so short compared to my other friends' but I have more internships than they do. I guess that's more important than extra-curriculars and 'seminars attended'...

Thank you for this post! Really prompted me for my interview tomorrow!!!! VERY HELPFUL :)

  • ElizabethHollman Elizabeth Hollman This is brilliant! It includes all the things I would think to say to a new grad and more. My husband's cousin graduated from grad school a few years back with a degree in psychology and was shocked he couldn't get a job, right away, that paid him $200k a year! I asked if he'd ever had a job. No. He was over-educated, over-ambitious, but under-experienced. I told him he would have been better served either working a few years between degrees or working after his bachelor degree and getting his masters degree nights while he worked. I got my BA at 35, after I'd been working for 17 years and started my MS at 42 while on a long hiatus from work during which I have raised my twins and older son. I knew if I didn't do something to keep me relevant, no one would ever look at my resume. I don't worry about finding a job upon graduation. I ran a business under Viacom at age 22, worked directly for a CEO, had positions created for me, and have worked in the nuclear industry. I'm pretty well-rounded. I do worry about my classmates though, who are 22, have only worked a couple of short internships, and have the expectation that they will receive very lucrative job offers upon graduation.
I'd pass this along to them, but I don't want them to worry! They are smart and resourceful and will find their way, whatever path they take!
Thank you for this informative presentation!

  • JamesFranklin6 James Franklin, Office Assistant at Austin Peay State University I graduated from college last year and still haven't found a job. I haven't had an interview in months. Your advice is very good. However, I've already done everything you advised. I didn't have an internship, instead I worked as an office assistant for two years at my university. 1 week ago

  • markrotoole Mark O'Toole, Managing director, public relations & content marketing at HB Agency @LiamStrain Liam, paid or unpaid -- it doesn't matter. But having the internship experience is invaluable for the student. It gives them something meaningful for a resume and let's them know more about a job they may or may not like. Thanks! 1 week ago
