  • 1. The Efficacy of University/College Social Change Centers Mark Pomerantz, Seattle University Seattle, WA , US RENT XXII Doctoral Symposium Covilhã, Portugal November 22, 2008
  • 2. What is Social Entrepreneurship?
    • There are many definitions of social entrepreneurship, from Greg Dees to Paul Light.
    • Social entrepreneurs are social change agents armed with a diverse “tool bag” of cutting edge financial, leadership, communications, and hi-tech techniques
    • Social entrepreneurs are people that try to bring society more into balance between the haves and the have-nots, the large and the small, the local and the global and capital and labor.
  • 3. Research Questions
    • What is the efficacy to the university, students, and greater community of developing curriculum and centers in colleges and universities specifically to train students to be social change agents?
    • What is the demand for such curriculum.
    • What would be some outcomes of such programs?
  • 4. Literature Review
    • Dees has written about the application of entrepreneurship techniques to solving social problems
    • Alter has created a typology of social entrepreneurship definitions and models
    • Dees, Emerson, and Boschee have written about tools and techniques for nonprofit organizations developing “social enterprises”
    • Emerson has written about “venture philanthropy” and measuring “social return on investment”
    • Mosher-Williams has been compiling research and sources on social entrepreneurship
    • Wei-Skillern et al have written about corporate social entrepreneurship
    • Welch, Bornstein, Wei-Skillern et al have written case studies of social entrepreneurial practitioners
    • Nicholls has written about building an academic field of social entrepreneurship
    • Leadbetter has written about the “socially entrepreneurial city”
  • 5. Methodology (Qualitative Research)
    • Interviews (with social entrepreneurs, academic faculty, and university administrators) re: the desirability of establishing social entrepreneurship and social change management programs.
    • Delphi process with international faculty on the efficacy and future of social change focused programs in the university.
    • Surveys of faculty, high school students and their parents about interest in college programs combining liberal arts, general education with entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, technology studies, social activism, CSR, et al. into a social change agent program.
  • 6. Presentation of the Data: What I Believe I Might Find
    • I believe the data will show:
      • a demand for college/university education involving social entrepreneurship and its meaningful fusion with liberal arts, engineering, social activism et al
      • that the model is efficacious in helping to educate students perceived to have leadership and change management skills and interests.
      • a consensus regarding the role of the university to adapt teaching and curriculum to facilitate the training of innovators and social entrepreneurs during periods of rapid societal change.
