The various types of air compressors

  1. 1. The Various Types Of Air Compressors By Matt Stevens Dated: 28/08/2012 Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
  2. 2. What are air compressors?•Air compressors are mechanical devices•They compress air in chambers•Thecompressed air is transformed into kineticenergy•The kinetic energy is used to drive pneumaticdrills, spray painters etc. Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
  3. 3. What are The Types? There are 4 types of air compressors:•Reciprocating or piston compressors•Rotary sliding vane compressors•Rotary screw compressors•Centrifugal compressors Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
  4. 4. Reciprocating or piston compressors•These are the most common types•The gas is compressed by driving the piston ina reciprocal way•The gas goes into a pressurized cylinder•Later the gas is released through valves Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
  5. 5. Rotary screw compressors•They use two rotors – one male & one female•The air enters the chamber and is trapped inthe chamber•The male & female rotors compress the air•The compressed air is pushed away andmakes way for fresh air Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
  6. 6. Rotary sliding vane compressors•Consists of one rotor placed inside a waterjacketed cylinder•8-12 blades are attached to the rotor•The air is forced against the wall•The airis thus compressed and afterwardsreleased Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
  7. 7. Centrifugal compressors•They are called as radial compressors•They consist of pumps, fans & blowers•They can create pressures of 8000-10000psi Copyright: www.irco.co.uk
