    • Students work on their own writing, but as part of a collaborative effort to publish a group book or magazine. At project conclusion, the students’ individually created elements (pages, text sidebars, illustrations, etc.) are assembled together as the finished, group publication.
    • Students review and give feedback for one another’s writing. Throughout the project, the teacher periodically engages the whole group in reflecting about all aspects of the work and how the individual and group efforts are progressing.

    • The kit guides a class through the following phases of writing, designing, and publishing a class book or magazine:
    • Identifying a theme. The teacher may select a general subject for the publication – or lead the class in a focused brainstorming session to select one. This ensures the project is aligned to the curriculum and the class’ instructional goals. However, each student will identify a personal topic or sub-theme to write about. This supports student motivation and fosters engagement, This process models important, authentic dimensions of how writing happens in the real world.

Through focused online searches and activities to organize, reflect on, and process the information found, students collect much of the information they’ll need to inform and support their writing. This also reinforces interest in the project as the students are encouraged to follow personal interests in the research.
