1. 2.

The Inverted Pyramid is an approach that teaches you to write from the general to the specific.

General Comment Qualify your Words Relate Thesis
 2. 3.

Focus on a key word related to topic

Conflict

Write an opening sentence that provides a general comment about that word.

Throughout their life many people struggle with various conflicts.

Write 2 or 3 sentences that qualify your word in the sense that you mean it. “Stretch it out” and build upon your key word.

Whether it be a minor disagreement or something on a larger scale, conflicts occur in everyday life. Conflict can come from the choices one makes or a situation a person involves themselves in.

 3. 4.

Now write a sentence that clearly relates to the previous sentences. This sentence introduces your topic.

Conflict is often the driving force behind the greatest books and novels.

Finally, you write your thesis statement.

Wait…what is a thesis statement?

 4. 5. Thesis Statement

There are three aspects of a thesis statement that you should focus on

Subject

Stance

Blueprints

In “The Gift of the Magi,” the theme of young love can be seen in

Della’s selfless act, Della’s desire to buy a gift she can not afford,

and Jim’s reaction after he receives the chain for his watch.

 5. 6. Use This Formula

In the story, ( name of story, book, or novel ) ( examples of, the theme of, conflict can be found ) can be seen in ( blueprint1 ), ( blueprint 2 ), ( blueprint 3 ).

In “The Gift of the Magi,” the theme of young love can be seen in Della’s selfless act, Della’s desire to buy a gift she can not afford, and Jim’s reaction after he receives the chain for his watch.

 6. 7.

The society in which we live is dominated by images that attempt to portray a message. Whether it is an eagle that stands for national pride or a flashing red light, these images provide a meaning for people to associate with. What the image represents is more important than what the image actually is. In literature, authors use symbols to deliver a message that is often implied rather than obvious. In “The Scarlet Ibis,” the use of symbols can be seen in the appearance of the word “red”, the arrival of the Ibis, and in the character of Aunt Nicey.

 7. 8.

Focus on a key word related to topic

Write an opening sentence that provides a general comment about that word.

Write 2 or 3 sentences that qualify your word in the sense that you mean it.

Now write a sentence that clearly relates to the previous sentences. Introduce your topic.

Finally, you write your thesis statement.

 8. 9.

The three blueprints from our thesis statement will be our topic sentences for our three body paragraphs.

In “The Gift of the Magi” the theme of young love can be seen in Della’s selfless act, Della’s desire to buy a gift she can not afford, and Jim’s reaction after he receives the chain for his watch.
 9. 10.

The blueprint ( topic sentence ) will be your first sentence of your body paragraph.

Sentences following your topic sentence are called supporting sentences.

facts

examples

quotes

“… this demonstrates conflict because…”

Any sentences that does not support your topic sentence or seems off topic can be eliminated.

 10. 11. Transitions

A transitional word does exactly what it says—it transitions, or flows, one idea into the next.

In the paragraph you would transition between one supporting sentence and the next.

 11. 12. Body Paragraphs One example where the theme of young love can be seen is in Della’s selfless act. Della makes a sacrifice that many people may not be willing to make. In fact , her hair is the one thing that both Della and her husband admire most. The narrator goes as far as to say “Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate the Queen of Sheeba’s jewels.” Without a doubt , the actions of this character go on to demonstrate the presence of love in this story; how one person would be willing to sacrifice something that is apart of them to ensure the other is satisfied. Della loves Jim enough to lose something she is know for just to make him happy.
 12. 13.

This is the last paragraph of your paper.

Recaps what you already stated

Restate your thesis

Not just copy and past, but restated (rephrased)

General information on all three blueprints

Information from your body paragraphs

Can provide a viewpoint

Not a personal opinion, but a statement that tells your reader what you were trying to accomplish

No new information.

 13. 14. Inverted Pyramid Information Information Information Body Paragraphs Conclusion Thesis Statement Restate Thesis
 14. 15.

Your first sentence will restate your thesis statement.

(Original Thesis)

“ In The Gift of the Magi,” the theme of young love can be seen in Della’s selfless act, Della’s desire to buy a gift she can not afford, and Jim’s reaction after he receives the chain for his watch.

(First sentence of conclusion rephrased)

The reoccurring theme of young love is evident in the story through the selfless actions of Della and the loving understanding of her husband Jim.

 15. 16.

Include two or three sentences of general information about your three blueprints. You can take information from your body paragraphs and rephrase them into new sentences. Do not provide any new information in this paragraph.

Della’s personal sacrifice plays a major role in establishing the theme of young love.

In fact, the reaction displayed by both characters clearly demonstrate they care more for each other than for the gifts they receive.

 16. 17.

Can provide a viewpoint.

One can clearly see how all three reasons provide evidence to the theme of young love.

It is evident that these reasons support the theme of young love in this story.

The actions of these characters support the theme of young love throughout the story.

 17. 18.

One final sentence to end the paper.

Regardless of the outcome (In conclusion,…), the actions of these two characters lead the reader to recognize the theme of young love in this story.

 18. 19.

The reoccurring theme of young love is evident in the story through the selfless actions of Della and the loving understanding of her husband Jim. Della’s personal sacrifice plays a major role in establishing the theme of young love. In fact, the reactions displayed by both characters clearly demonstrate they care more for each other than for the gifts they receive. The actions of these characters continually support the theme throughout the story. The analysis of these characters provide enough evidence for the reader to recognize the theme of young love in “The Gift of the Magi.”
