  • 1. WRITING A FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY
  • 2. Writing a Thesis Statement
    • Use This Formula:
    • Subject, Stance, Examples
    • Example Thesis Statement:
    • The school dress code policy should not be adopted
        • due to various circumstances within the school and among the students.
  • 3. Introduction Paragraph
    • Use the Inverted Pyramid
    • The Inverted Pyramid is an approach that teaches you to write from the general to the specific.
General Comment Qualify your Words Relate Thesis
  • 4. Inverted Pyramid
    • Focus on a key word related to topic
      • Clothing
    • Write an opening sentence that provides a general comment about that word.
      • Many people feel that clothing defines them as a person.
    • Write 2 or 3 more specific sentences that lead you closer to the actual topic that you are going to discuss (thesis).
      • Whether it be formal attire or jeans and sneakers, people tend to wear clothes that they are most comfortable in. Sometimes the type of clothes people wear is dependent upon their lifestyle.
  • 5. Inverted Pyramid
    • Now write a sentence that clearly relates to the previous sentences and also introduces your specific topic.
      • Dress code policies often limit people’s personal choices and infringe upon their financial situations.
    • Finally, you write your thesis statement
      • The school dress code policy should not be adopted due to various circumstances within the school and among the students.
  • 6. Inverted Pyramid
      • Many people feel that clothing defines them as a person.
      • Whether it be formal attire or jeans and sneakers, people tend to
      • wear clothes that they are most comfortable in. Sometimes the type
      • of clothes people wear is dependent upon their lifestyle. Dress code
      • policies often limit people’s personal choices and infringe upon their
      • financial situations. Therefore, the school dress code policy should
      • not be adopted due to various circumstances within the school and among the students.
  • 7. Body Paragraphs
    • The “examples” from your thesis statement will be your topic sentences for our three body paragraphs.
    • In the example thesis statement, the three examples can be:
    • It is costly
    • It would make students uncomfortable
    • It takes away from individuality
        • The school dress code policy should not be adopted due to various circumstances within the school and among the students.
  • 8. Body paragraphs
    • The first example will become your first sentence of your body paragraph (topic sentence).
    • Ex. One reason why the dress code should not be adopted is because it is costly.
    • Sentences following your topic sentence are called supporting sentences. Topic sentences are supported with:
      • Facts
      • Examples
      • Reasons
      • Quotes
  • 9. Transitions
    • A transitional sentence does exactly what it says—it transitions, or flows, one idea into the idea of another.
    • For example, if your essay is about your favorite book, your first body paragraph may discuss the main reason why it is your favorite book. Within that paragraph you would use transitional words to move from one idea to the next to form a sense of unity in your paragraph
    • In other words, you would transition between one supporting sentence and the next.
  • 10. Revising Body paragraphs
    • After writing a body paragraph, review it.
    • Any sentence that does not support your topic sentence or seems off topic can be eliminated.
    • Paragraphs should have transitions within it when necessary to connect information and make it “flow”.
    • Sentences that make similar points should follow each other to increase “flow”.
  • 11. Example Body Paragraph One reason the dress code should not be adopted is because it is costly. Most students already own jeans, cargo pants, and tee shirts. Forcing students to wear collared shirts with no logos and khaki pants is an added expense to parents who must also buy their children regular clothing to wear at night and on weekends. Essentially, parents are being forced to increase there family budget in order to buy an unnecessary amount of clothes. In fact , allowing students to continue wearing jeans will surely help reduce the amount of money parents will have to spend on clothes.
  • 12. The Conclusion
    • The conclusion is the last paragraph of the essay.
    • You should restate your thesis by using different words to avoid being repetitive (a summary thesis would work best)
    • You may include general information on all three body paragraphs
    • You may not introduce new information
    • You may provide a viewpoint if you wish
    • Final sentence must provide closure
  • 13. Inverted Pyramid Information Information Information Body Paragraphs Conclusion Thesis Statement Restate Thesis
  • 14. Example
    • Clearly there are many reason why the school board should not adopt a dress code policy. The added cost of school clothes would be a burden to many families. In addition, students should be free to express themselves through their clothing and should not have to fee uncomfortable in clothes that someone else chose for them. It is obvious that the policy is not in the student’s best interests. The school should definitely refrain from adopting it.
