    • TOPICS IN LESSON 1 - Basic components of research - Characteristics of a good researcher - Basic Versus Applied Research - Requirements of Basic Research - Importance of Research in -Daily life, -Groups, and -other organizations
    • OBJECTIVES 1.Define research and its basic components 2.List the characteristics of a good research problem 3.Differentiate basic from applied research 4.Explain the requirements of basic research 5.Appreciate the importance of research in daily life, groups, and other organizations 6.Write a title of a basic research that you want to study
    • ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS 1.From where do we proceed in choosing our problem for Thesis Writing? 2. What are those that we read or observe when we write our title/ problem? 3. When do we consider an investigator of research a good researcher?
    • Define Research - Research is searching for theory, for testing theory, and for solving a problem. It means that a problem exists and has to be identified, to be solved or recommend for solutions to the problem when needed. - In scientific research, research is systematic, controlled , empirical and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about a presumed relations among natural phenomena (Kerlinger, 1973). This meaning has been quoted many times by various authorities in Research. It follows a step by step procedure in identifying problem(s), collecting and interpreting data, drawing conclusions and integration of these conclusions into the stream of knowledge. It is controlled unlike ordinary problems which may be solved immediately.
    • There is a problem when: Contradictory results Facts exists to be explained further Characteristics of a Good Researcher
    • EXPLANATION -Absence of Information lead one to explore and answer the WHYS -When one study is contradicting another in the same setting, there is a need for further research -Facts need to be explained in a further study
    • BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH BASIC RESEARCH -Descriptive -Questionnaire -Interview -Observation -Quantitative APPLIED RESEARCH -Exploratory -Experimental -Parametric -Observation -Qualitative
    • Characteristics of a Good Problem • Topic should be of great interest to you • It should be useful for the concerned peeople in a particular field • Should be novel • It should invites more complex designing • It scan be completed in the allotted time desired • Does not carry ethical or moral impediments
    • REQUIREMENTS OF BASIC RESEARCH 1.No duplication of the same study/problem 2.Usefulness to group of individuals 3.Novelty 4.One which invites more complex designing 5.Can be completed in allotted time desired 6.Does not carry ethical or moral impediments 7.Can be submitted to national and international research forums
    • Think of at least one importance of Research in the following: 1.Daily Life 2.Groups 3.Other Organizations
