SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE Dementia Care Training is changing in 2010 New Dementia Units as part of the QCF Diploma in Health & Social Care •2 levels of qualification for dementia care workers: Level 2 & Level 3 •14 modules focused exclusively on dementia (8 mandatory, 6 optional) Skills for Care Informed & Effective Workforce A new, flexible qualifications system to recognise & reward learning & development in vocational studies QCFs will replace the old NVQs QCF Quality of Care National Dementia Strategy OBJECTIVE 13 Achieve an informed and effective workforce for people with dementia JPA is the dementia sector specialist commissioned to write the QCF Dementia Units
  • 3. SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE How does the QCF support employers? Outcome 12 (Regulation 21) RECRUITMENT PROCEDURES Workers must have the qualifications, skills and experience which are necessary for the work to be performed Outcome 13 (Regulation 22) STAFFING LEVELS Numbers of suitably qualified, skilled and experienced persons employed for the purpose of carrying on the regulated activities Outcome 14 (Regulation 23) TRAINING AND SUPPORT Supporting workers by ensuring that they receive appropriate training, professional development, supervision and appraisal. In addition, workers should be enabled to obtain further qualifications appropriate to the work they perform. The new Dementia Units will help care providers comply with CQC regulations

SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE Dementia Learning Disabilities Physical Disabilities Sensory Services Required Units B A range of optional units to reflect job role, dependent on Rules of Combination Optional Units These Units will be completed by all learners Communication Equality and Diversity Personal Development Core Units Safeguarding adults in vulnerable situations Roles and Responsibilities Person-centred Support Health & Safety Required Units A Q C F DIPLOMA health & social care FOR EXAMPLE: FOR EXAMPLE: A new QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care Dementia
  • 5. SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE What if a learner already has an NVQ in HSC? The Required Specialist Dementia Units can be: • As an Award (Level 2) • As a Certificate (Level 3)

SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE Required Specialist Dementia Units QCF Dementia Units Level 2 Mandatory 1 Dementia awareness (K) 2 The person centred approach to the care and support of the individual with dementia (K) 3 Implement a person centred approach to the care and support of the individual with dementia (S) Optional 4 Understanding approaches to enabling rights and choices, while protecting individuals with dementia from harm (K) 5 Recognise the impact of diversity, equality and inclusion on the experience of dementia (K) K = Knowledge unit | can be undertaken by learners before or while they are working with people with dementia S = Skills unit | only appropriate to those who are currently providing care and support to individuals

SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE Required Specialist Dementia Units QCF Dementia Units Level 3 Mandatory 1 Understand the process and experience of Dementia (K) 2 Understand the role of communication and positive interaction with individuals who have dementia (K) 3 Enable positive relationships, interaction and communication with individuals with dementia (S) 4 Understand the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion (K) 5 Work with individuals with dementia in a way which celebrates diversity and equality (S) Optional 6 Understanding approaches to enabling individuals with dementia to experience wellbeing (K) 7 Implementing approaches to enabling individuals with dementia to experience wellbeing (S) 8 Understanding approaches to enabling rights and choices, while protecting individuals with dementia from harm (K)
  • 8. SKILLS FOR DEMENTIA CARE 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Award (1-12 credits) Certificate (13-36 credits) Diploma (37+ credits) 60 hours at Level 2 70 hours at Level 3 20 hours at Level 2 Level(Contentbased) Qualification Type (Time based) Learners can choose units at different levels
