    • Cloud computing CLOUDS – Not a new technology– A change in the use of technology • Internet of Services • Benefits for Industry • Greener IT ••• 2
    • Cloud computing ••• 3
    • Cloud computingChallenges for Industry• Control• Performance• Transparency• Reliability – Privacy & legal issues –Where is my data? – Who can access it? – Whose law applies? – What rights do I have? – How can I preserve my data in a long term? ••• 4
    • Cloud computingChallenges for Industry• Vendor strategy– No clear understanding of the term: various companies have rebranded their services as “clouds”– Control the technology stack– Seamless offerings - Concentration/centralisation - Less choice for users• Changes in competitiveness?• Vendor lock-in & standards• Cloud Interoperability & Portability ••• 5
    • Cloud computingEU challenges and vision• Build on Service Oriented Architecture / Grid technologies / Telecom /Media• Focus R&D investment• Affordable broadband• Open standards• Data protection ••• 6

    • Ministerial Declaration on eGovernment Malmö, 2009• Promote innovation in eGovernment services through research and development, pilot projects and other implementation schemes.• Develop the possibilities offered by new open and flexible service architectures and new computing paradigms. Innovation is a central part of eGovernment and will contribute to the goal of making Europe a leading knowledge-based economy.• Identify gaps in cross-border interoperability and mutual recognition and intensify the activities on key enablers such as trustworthy electronic identity, electronic signatures and electronic documents, and continue developing a joint infrastructure, for example the Internal Market Information system that can be used by all Member States administrations and the Commission in the provision of cross-border services. ••• 10
    • Ministerial Declaration on eGovernment Malmö, 2009• The programme for Interoperability Solutions for European Public Administrations and other European interoperability activities should play an important role in achieving this goal. When available, existing infrastructure should be used to build additional services and development of new infrastructures should be based upon real needs which are commonly agreed.• Develop cross-border eGovernment services that are based on real social and economic needs. We will initiate joint projects of cross- border eGovernment services based on specific needs. Sectoral projects would benefit from synergies with other sectors and the reuse of existing infrastructures rather than developing specific sectoral-based solutions. ••• 11
    • Ministerial Declaration on the European Digital Agenda Granada, 2010• Explore ways to seize the opportunities of cloud computing to provide productivity and efficiency gains as well as environmental gains especially for European public bodies, small businesses and communities ••• 12
    • Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE)“Europe should also build its innovative advantage in keyareas through reinforced eInfrastructures and through thetargeted development of innovation clusters in key fields. It should develop an EU-wide strategy on "cloudcomputing" notably for government and science. The strategy should consider economic, legal andinstitutional aspects.”“As there will be many solutions, industry, supported bypolicy actions – in particular eGovernment services -should ensure interoperability based on standardsand open development platforms.” ••• 13
    • THE FUTURE OF CLOUD COMPUTING -OPPORTUNITIES FOR EUROPEAN CLOUDCOMPUTING BEYOND 2010 - Expert Group Report Main Recommendations 1. The EC should stimulate research and technological development in the area of Cloud Computing 2. The EC together with Member States should set up the right regulatory framework to facilitate the uptake of Cloud computing ••• 14
    • ICT Research Workprogramme 2011-20121.2 Cloud Computing, Internet of Services and Advanced Software Engineering Target outcomes Intelligent and autonomic management of cloud resources, Cloud computing ensuring agile elastic scalability. Scalable data management strategies, addressing the issues of heterogeneity, consistency, availability, privacy and supporting security. Technologies for infrastructure virtualisation, cross platforms execution as needed for service composition across multiple, Management of heterogeneous environments, autonomous management of cloud resources hardware and software resources. Cloud Interoperability amongst different clouds, portability, protection Interoperability of data in cloud environments, control of data distribution and latency. Mobile, context- aware applications Seamless support of mobile, context-aware applications. Open source Energy efficiency and sustainability for software and services on implementation the cloud. of a software stack for clouds Architectures and technologies supporting integration of computing and networking environments; implications of Cloud Computing paradigm on networks Open Source implementations of a software stack for Clouds ••• 15
