Experimental music <ul><li>“[I define experimental as] anything that has departed significantly from norms of the time, but with the understanding that something experimental in 1985 could have inspired what was conventional by 1990” Joanna Demers, Listening through the Noise (2010:7) </li></ul><ul><li>Made by modified/repurposed instruments </li></ul><ul><li>use of music technology (synthesizers, computers) </li></ul><ul><li>often has a “chance” factor </li></ul>
  6. 6. Cold and Ice themes in Music <ul><li>Coldwave: French version of 80s New wave. Minimal, dark sounds, feeling of “coldness” and isolation created by sound effects (reverb and chorus). Ice and cold related lyrics </li></ul><ul><li>Neue Deutsche Welle: German version of New Wave </li></ul><ul><li>Both are Punk influenced musics: DIY ideology, experimental and unconventional, political awareness, “no future” </li></ul>

Ice Music <ul><li>Terje Isungset, Geilo-born experimental composer and performer </li></ul><ul><li>Idea of ice music concept driven by national awareness and need for a unique sound-making experience inspired by Norwegian nature </li></ul><ul><li>2005: the 1st Ice Music festival takes place </li></ul>
