Google+ User eXperience

 1. 1. User Experience Group D Andrey Bagdasarov Cristi á n Castro Youlia Lilianova Aznar Fernández de Pinedo Karla Ramos Maria Skounta
 2. 2.

Google+ is search engine giant’s Google social networking platform set to rival Facebook.

According to Google’s official blog, the necessity of its creation is because:

"In this basic, human way, online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it.“

 3. 3.

Friendly environment

Modern and minimalist interface

Similar design with Facebook “Old Habits die hard”

Content seems more “mature”

Filters incoming and outcoming information

Integrates social media to Google’s already powerful network (Google +1)

Users can actively give content and affect

search results.

But does really have what it takes to dethrone Facebook?
 4. 4. Best Practices

Circles

In the offline world everybody shares different information with different people.

With Circles it is easier to control your sharing with the different lists of people.

Users create different Circles like “Family”, “Friends”, “Work”, “Uni mates” etc. and isolate different information and activities to be seen only by the desired group.

Sharing like in real life – different things with different people
 5. 5. Best Practices

Hangouts

Users are able to invite and make video calls with up to 10 friends simultaneously.

No more texting back and forth. Now you can let your circles of friends know that you’re hanging out and they can drop by and have a face-to-face conversation with you.

“ Until we perfect teleportation, it’s the next best thing . ” – Google
 6. 6. Best Practices

Huddle

When trying to communicate with multiple people to decide on a common activity, Google+ Huddle is the perfect and easy solution. You can huddle all groups into one single chat to save you time and confusion.

Extra bonus: it can also be done from

an Android or iphone.

“ Your Thumbs Will Thank You. ” – Google
 7. 7. Best Practices

Instant Upload

Instant upload gives you an incredibly easy way to share your photos and videos to your own private Google+ album.

Privacy

Google+ offers different levels of visibility to different aspects of the user’s profile, is managed easily and offers the user the possibility to be at any point in charge of his own account.

 8. 8. Weaknesses

Lack of critical mass

Google+ was introduced to the public in late June 2011.

Although it may seem that Google+ starts from point zero and has to battle the social network giant Facebook, it is a matter of time before it catches up, mainly because of its improved features and enormous existing user database of Google.

“ It’s like Facebook with no people”
 9. 9. Weaknesses

Circles

People can add you to their circles without asking for your permission.

This can very easily be improved by adding the notification option. If Google+ is all about you , you should be able to control all aspects of your profile.

Mobile app

No hangouts on mobile, due to the lack of video chat option.

Because most of the online activity happens through smartphones, Google has to develop an application that integrates all features of the traditional version.

Iphone application was not available. It is crucial for its future success that it is supported by one of the most popular smartphones on the market.

 10. 10. New Feature

Business Pages

The platform at the moment is not built for the business use case.

Research:

As of July 21, 2011 the Google+ pages for major brands like Mashable, Ford and Sesame Street were all gone. Mashable was, according to SocialStatistics.com, the No. 4 most popular account on Google+ with more than 103,000 followers. All of those accounts were replaced by a 404 error message.

In response, Christien Oestlien from Google says: As a result <of a survey taken>, we have refocused a few priorities and we expect to have an initial version of businesses profiles up and running for EVERYONE in the next few months. In the meantime, we ask you not to create a business profile using regular profiles on Google+. The platform at the moment is not built for the business use case, and we want to help you build long-term relationships with your customers. Doing it right is worth the wait. We will continue to disable business profiles using regular profiles. We recommend you find a real person who is willing to represent your organization on Google+ using a real profile as him-or-herself.

 11. 11. New Feature

Business Pages

The platform at the moment is not built for the business use case.

Design:

The best case scenario for Google is having brands link to their Google+ brand pages from their corporate homepages fueling mass adoption.

This would already give them an extra edge over Facebook who doesn’t know how to differentiate between business and pleasure.

 12. 12. New Feature

Business Pages

The platform at the moment is not built for the business use case.

Test:

Since Google+ will not allow profile with fake names they should consider having an officer (with their real name) to represent the business. If they do this right, the brands will do the marketing for them.

How it can work: Brands will jump on and implement a “Google+ strategy”, then they will race to see who gets the most circle members and turn their marketing engines on.
