WELCOME TO MY WIKI!

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a website on which the pages can be edited by the users as well as the creator of the website. The users can
change the content by adding or removing information, or editing the existing content.

Benefits and goals

One of the most powerful benefits of using wikis in language learning is as a collaborative tool. Potentially, everyone in a
group could work at changing and editing a document and work towards a final version of a particular text. A wiki could
allow your class to share notes. It could be a place where learners communicate with each other outside lessons. The
premise here is that the students can learn from each other, and learn through their interactions with other group
members.

How is a wiki different from a blog?

A blog is essentially an online journal or diary, usually written by one person, which is added to regularly. Most blogs
allow visitors to add comments, which are then visible to the blog owner and also to subsequent visitors who can in turn
comment further. A wiki, on the other hand, is like a public website, or public webpage, started by one person, but
which subsequent visitors can add to, delete or change as they wish. Instead of being a static website like a blog, a wiki is
more dynamic, and can have multiple authors. A wiki is like having a publicity accessible word processing document
available online, which anyone can edit. Essentially, a wiki is not linear, like a blog. A blog consists of a number of
postings published on one page and in reverse chronological order with the most recent posting at the top. A wiki has a
non-linear structure and pages may link back and forwards to other pages.

To my mind, a wiki is better for teaching purposes than blogs since its main page is linked to other pages where students
can go if they would like to do so at any time and its postings are not published in reverse chronological order. Wikis are
good options for teachers because students can be active participants by adding, editing or changing information, but in
blogs students can only add comments.

  • 1. marianaclaure.wikispaces.com HOME WELCOME TO MY WIKI! What is a wiki? A wiki is a website on which the pages can be edited by the users as well as the creator of the website. The users can change the content by adding or removing information, or editing the existing content. Benefits and goals One of the most powerful benefits of using wikis in language learning is as a collaborative tool. Potentially, everyone in a group could work at changing and editing a document and work towards a final version of a particular text. A wiki could allow your class to share notes. It could be a place where learners communicate with each other outside lessons. The premise here is that the students can learn from each other, and learn through their interactions with other group members. How is a wiki different from a blog? A blog is essentially an online journal or diary, usually written by one person, which is added to regularly. Most blogs allow visitors to add comments, which are then visible to the blog owner and also to subsequent visitors who can in turn comment further. A wiki, on the other hand, is like a public website, or public webpage, started by one person, but which subsequent visitors can add to, delete or change as they wish. Instead of being a static website like a blog, a wiki is more dynamic, and can have multiple authors. A wiki is like having a publicity accessible word processing document available online, which anyone can edit. Essentially, a wiki is not linear, like a blog. A blog consists of a number of postings published on one page and in reverse chronological order with the most recent posting at the top. A wiki has a non-linear structure and pages may link back and forwards to other pages. To my mind, a wiki is better for teaching purposes than blogs since its main page is linked to other pages where students can go if they would like to do so at any time and its postings are not published in reverse chronological order. Wikis are good options for teachers because students can be active participants by adding, editing or changing information, but in blogs students can only add comments.
