Who was Annie Sullivan? <ul><li>Born in 1866 on April 14.
She taught Helen Keller how to communicate by finger spelling into her hand.
She and Helen became famous for their many accomplishments. </li></ul>
Annie as a child <ul><li>She was very unhappy as a child.
Her mother died when Annie was 8 years old.
Annie had trachoma. She got the eye disease from her younger sister who died from a terrible fever. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Annie was sent to the Tewksbery Almshouse with her brother Jimmie.
Her brother died of tuberculosis as their mother had.

  10. 10. Asked Frank B. Sanborn, a man who came to inspect the poorhouse, for help and in 1880 she was admitted to the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston.

  12. 12. Annie meets Helen Keller <ul><li>Helen Keller becomes blind and deaf.
  13. 13. Helen's father asks Annie to come to Tuscumbia, Alabama to help his daughter.
  14. 14. In 1880 Sullivan arrives at Helen's home and starts teaching her to communicate right away. </li></ul>
  15. 15. <ul><li>Annie takes Helen Keller to visit the Perkins Institution for Helen to get an even more better education.
  16. 16. In 1900 Helen enters Radcliffe College in Massachusetts with Annie's help.
  17. 17. When Helen was almost 23 years old John Macy, who was an editor, helped publish Helen Keller's The Story of My Life . </li></ul>Working with Keller
  18. 18. <ul><li>On May 3, 1905 Annie Sullivan married John Macy.
  19. 19. Deliverance , a movie based on Helen's life with Annie by her side, is produced in Hollywood.
  20. 20. Annie and Helen start doing work for the American Foundation for the Blind in 1924 after the movie is produced. </li></ul>
  21. 21. <ul><li>Temple University in Philadelphia awarded both Annie and Helen an honorary degree.
  22. 22. Annie Sullivan dies on October 20, 1936.
  23. 23. A play about Annie's early work with Helen in produced. ( The Miracle Worker. ) </li></ul>
