• 1. MUSIC GENRES
The Music industry is full of many different genres such as RnB, Hip Hop, Dance, Pop and many others. The genre of music that I enjoy the most is rock.
Rock music is a genre which emerged in the mainstream in the 1960’s with names such as ‘The Beatles’ and ‘The Rolling Stones’ being huge successes and still very popular today. Rock is the main genre, although in the early days of Rock, the sub-genres were as punk rock, garage rock and blues rock.
In the decade of the 1950’s, the genre of music was Rock and Roll. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine argued that ‘That’s All Right’ by Elvis Presley was the first rock and roll song released. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, rock culturally originated from the United Kingdom and the United States of America. During the 1950’s, the instruments usually associated with rock music were electric guitars, a keyboard instrument, a bass guitar and the drums. Harmonicas were sometimes used as solo instruments.
Since the 1970’s, many more sub-genres have emerged; glam rock, heavy metal, punk rock, new wave, alternative, indie rock only naming a few. Today, many rock groups consist of an electric guitarist, lead singer, bass guitarist, and a drummer, therefore forming a quartet. Some bands have more than one of these roles for example Kids in Glass Houses have two electric guitar players.
The majority of the rock music videos consist of the band playing live, whether it is footage from a concert or the video focusing on the band playing the song on a set. For example, the music video for Paramore’s ‘Careful’ was purely footage from a concert they had recently played. All time Low’s video ‘Weightless’ shows the band playing in front of an audience, although this audience was just for the making of the video.
House parties are also a recurrence in music videos. Marilyn Manson is a Goth and his music tends to be hard rock/metal. His video for ‘Tainted Love’ was shot at a house party full of cheerleaders. The video ‘This ain’t a scene, it’s an arms race’ by Fall Out Boy also has part of the video shot at a house party, although in their video they are trashing a hotel room. Music videos that are shot during house parties usually consist of rooms being vandalised.
Successful Rock groups which have emerged include the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, REM, Nirvana, Oasis, Iron Maiden, U2, Blondie, Led Zeppelin, The Foo Fighters.Rock and Roll originated in the early 1950’s and the King of Rock and Roll is Elvis Presley. Even after death he is still a ‘cultural icon’ and is sometimes referred to as being ‘The King’.
When rock began, it was blues and jazzy, however now there are many different types of rock and very many sub genres of rock. Over the years groups have changed and rock music has progressed to what it is today.
