Why could this MV be considered postmodern?
3. Lesson Objective
To explore voyeurism/
panopticanisation/ scopophilia as a
sign of postmodernism in media text
4. definitions
Voyeurism: the pleasure of
looking at real people (
characters), eg reality TV
Panopticanisation:
the idea that the
power lies with the
watcher and that
those under
surveillance must act
as if they are being
watched all the time.
Foucault
Scopophillia: love of
looking/pleasure gained from
watching others. Often sexual
gazing at women by Hollywood.
5. Films
The Trueman Show (1998)

6. Reality TV
Celebrity Big Brother
http://www.channel5.com/shows/celebrity-big-
brother/episodes/episode-11-307
Celebrities under surveillance 24 hours a day, not knowing
which parts will reach the final edit. This will effect how
they behave as they will be trying to avoid eviction in most
cases.
7. Task
Why are these text considered postmodern?
H/W Find two additional examples of voyeuristic media
text and post them up to your blog. Under each explain
how they use voyeurism to engage the audience. If it’s a
reality show explain how panopticanisation applies.
9. Self-reflixivity
marked by or making reference to its own artificiality or
contrivance
where a text knows it's a text and draws attention to it's
structure, production and/or conventions to the audience.
In doing so, it reverses itself reflecting its own reality
rather than an outside one.
Characters/actors often address the camera, thereby
breaking down the fourth wall.
12. Scream
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1M3w_o7cOc
In Scream horror conventions are employed literally and at
the same time self-consciously. The dialogue of the film
includes detailed descriptions of the mechanics and
effects of the horror film, explaining at each step what is
expected.
