  3. 3. People-pastimes/hobbies Italians love dancing and music, opera being the most popular. La Scala in Milan is the most famous opera house in Italy. Football is the national sport in Italy, there is also a growing interest in Rugby. In the year 2000 Italy joined Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England and France to form the Six Nations Championship. Motor Racing is another popular sport, there are two Grand Prix racing tracks in Italy. Hunting is also popular and there are over 800,000 regular hunters in Italy.
  4. 4. Holidays <ul><li>During Holidays Italians like to go to places, ¾ stay in Italy while the rest like to travel from place to place. Although ¾ stay in the country, doesn’t mean they stay at home. Italy has over 2,000 campsites, ranging to from very basic bush ones to fancy ones. </li></ul>

  6. 6. Food <ul><li>In Italy pasta is one of the most common foods, it’s made from semolina that comes from hard durum wheat. It’s then mixed with water to make pasta dough. Colours of pasta can be then changed by adding different ingredients, such as spinach for green pasta, tomato for red, and sometimes ink from squid for black pasta. The dough is then made into different shapes and sizes then cooked. </li></ul><ul><li>Mozzarella is a cheese made in Italy. Real Mozzarella is made from buffalo milk, but this isn’t always how it’s made now. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Climate/Weather <ul><li>There is a volcano on Stromboli Island that erupts several times an hour, it has been erupting in this pattern for the last 160,000 years. In 2002 Italy suffered their worst drought in 50 years. Farmers lost $2.8billion. Hospitals ran out of water, water was being stolen and then resold. In some towns water was only available for two hours a day. </li></ul><ul><li>In the last decade there has also been a lot of flooding in Italy, due to lots of cemented areas, then the water can’t soak into the ground. </li></ul><ul><li>Italy has a big range of temperatures, from the cool alpine region to the very warm Mediterranean peninsula. Regional winds affect temperatures of different areas. </li></ul>

Transport <ul><li>Italy has 6,450km motorway. </li></ul><ul><li>Italy has one of the highest levels of car ownership in the world, with over 32million on he road. </li></ul><ul><li>Smaller cars are more popular in Italy due to easier parking and it’s cheaper to run them. </li></ul><ul><li>There are 16,000km of railway in Italy. </li></ul><ul><li>There are 17 main airports. </li></ul>

  11. 11. Industry/Job <ul><li>Italy’s Economy is the 7 th largest in the world, but growth is slowing down. An estimated 60 percent of Italian’s are employed, but unemployment is increasing. A lot of people follow their family business, sharing their expertise with the next generation. </li></ul><ul><li>Italy is well know for their </li></ul><ul><li>clothing and footwear. </li></ul>

Our Australian $1 is equal to €1.23. </li></ul><ul><li>Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake, at 370km 2. </li></ul><ul><li>Sicily is one of Italy’s largest islands, with an area of 370km 2 </li></ul>
