Biology: Biomes Video

 1. 1. Biomes
Biomes are geographical areas filled with major communities, plants and animals. They are also known as major life zones. Biomes often have different types of animals and plants, or fauna (Animals) and flora (Plants), which have adapted to the environment. The same animals and plants can live in more than one biome.
Each biome is characterized by a particular type of climate, vegetation and animals, and extends over a large region of Earth’s surface.
Could a polar bear live in a desert? Why or why not? What animal could live in a desert? Why?
Biomes can be classified as
Terrestrial (land) Biomes which are often classified by their dominant plant life.
Aquatic biomes are biomes found in water and are usually named by their physical features.
1. Tropical rain forest biome: locates around the equator. They receive high level of rain (precipitation)
Tree: canopy Animal: monkey, frog, reptile, insects
2. Desert biomes located on 30oN -15oN, 30oS, 15oS. Receive less 10 inches or 25 cm of rain (precipitation) per year. It Comes from the Latin word deserted= abandon, forsake.
It is dominated by rock, sand, cactus and poor soil. Most plants are perennial
Animals: Rodent, shrub, birds, snake, tortoises
3. Temperate deciduous Biome: locate 60oN, 30oS. Cold winter
Deciduous trees lose their leaves; beech, oak, maple.
Grow during the spring and summer and lose their leave in autumn and lay dormant during the winter to prevent water lost. The soil is rich in nutrient_ Animals: bacteria, earthworm, fungi, fox, deer, squirrel and raccoons.
4. Grassland biome: receive 10 inches of rain. Use for agriculture.
In the following area grassland biome are called:
Prairie -North America
Steppe-Russia, Asia
Pampas –South America
Veldt – South Africa
Animal: Cattle, horse, coyote, rattlesnake
It is also called: the “breadbasket of the world”
5. Savanna Biome
Animal: Giraffe, zebra
Predator: lion, cheetah, Haynes
6. Chaparral biome: shrub-state of California in U.S.A
7. Temperate rain forest biome
Conifers, redwood, spruce, pine, fern
Animal: deer
8. Taiga biome = Boreal forest: animal: caribou, deer
9. Tundra biome =
The Earth is covered with more twice much water as land only 3% of this water is freshwater
Less than 100% of 1% River, stream, pond and lake
10. Marine biome:
Ocean water covered 71% of Earth’s surface
Five major types of ocean biomes
Coastal waters: supply nutrients
Near shore zone:
Coral reefs: warm tropical water, sponge
Open Ocean
Vent communities
Homework (due next class): create a poster board of a biome. The poster board should display (but is not limited to) the following characteristics of the biome: Name of Biome, Location, Temperatures, Precipitation, Vegetation, Animals, Drawing etc.
Or create a biome mobile.
Quiz: Questions and answer
1. Geographical filled with a major community of plants and animals are known as what?
2. What type of tree must lose their leaves in autumn to prevent water lose during the frozen
winters?
3. Name the biome that has nutrients rich soil and is most often use for agriculture. It is often
identified as the “Breadbasket of the world?
4. What types of trees are able to keep their leaves all year and survive cold, snowy winters?
5. Why are there no trees in tundra?
6. Where does less than 1/100 of 1/10 of the Earth’s freshwater exist?
7. Name two of the five types of oceans biomes presented in this program?
True/false
8. In some parts of the world the chaparral is the best represented by evergreen shrubs that are
able to survive the destructive forces of floods.
9. Reptiles, mammals, and huge variety of insects compete fiercely in the rain for nutrients.
10. To survive the hot time period in the desert, some animals borrow in the cold ground
Compare/Contrast Table
Ten Major BiomesUse the book/internet to fill in the tableBiomesPrecipitationTemperaturelocationAnimalsTreessoilTropical Rain ForestTropical Dry ForestTropical SavannaDesertTemperate GrasslandTemperate woodland and ShrublandTemperate ForestNorthwestern Coniferous ForestBoreal ForestTundra
http://www.scienceteacherprogram.org/biology/howes01.html
http://chalk.richmond.edu/education/projects/webunits/biomes/biomes.html (info)
