Outline

Guidelines

Maps

Concepts

Relationships

Relations:

are

is a

ObjectProperty

DataTypeProperty

Exercises

    3. 3. Guidelines: Maps

One top level KM only

The editor must possess relevant prior knowledge (an expert on the topic)

Needs to refer to particular question we seek to answer (focus question, better than just a topic)

Context will help to determine the hierarchical structure of the concept map

Use cross-links: relationships or links between concepts in different segments or domains of one or more concept maps

Quality: well organized, be consistent, qualitative data

Quantity: select a limited domain of knowledge; divide in multiple maps if needed

A concept map is never finished...

    4. 4. Guidelines: Concepts

Identify the key concepts that apply to the domain

Hierarchical fashion: general concepts at the top of the map and the more specific, less general concepts arranged hierarchically below

Label: in general with a word; sometimes multiple words; avoid “sentences”; English only

Create parking-lots; use annotations

Do not repeat concepts

    5. 5. Guidelines: Relationships

Connect two or more concepts using linking words or phrases to form a meaningful statement

Every concept could be related to every other concept: choose to identify the most prominent and most useful cross-links

Use only:

are : subclassOf  use this when you can further specify...

is a : instanceOf  use this when you do not have more “ is a”

DataTypeProperty : possibly from registry

ObjectProperty : possibly from registry

Naming convention: camelCase

    6. 6. DataTypeProperty

DataTypeProperty

from: concept (e.g. rice) or instance (e.g. Basmati rice)

to: defined type (e.g. int, float)

    7. 7. DataTypeProperty

DataTypeProperty

from: concept (e.g. rice) or instance (e.g. Basmati rice)

to: grain WRONG (not a data type)

    8. 8. ObjectProperty

ObjectProperty: relationship between 2 concepts or 2 instances

from: concept (e.g. rice) or instance (e.g. Basmati rice)

to: another concept or instance

    9. 9. are

subClassOf

from: concept (e.g. crop)

to: concept (e.g. rice)

NB: Do not add a name!
    10. 10. is a

instanceOf

from: concept (e.g. rice)

to: instance (e.g. Basmati rice)

NB: Do not add a name!
