Paying Attention Marci Segals Observations Crash Course Creativity Week 2 Assignment

Introduction The assignment was a little less than inspiring for me so Icreated my own. I observed others on the bus I takeevery day and focused on in a local supermarket. I didn’tlike what I saw in either.Both experiences prompted an insight, an opportunity forthe energetic to create something different and new.

Look Until You Really SeePassengers, mostly young adult immigrants,are absorbed in smartphones playing games indimly lit bedlam, some munch on junk food.It’s hot, crowded and smells of stale corn chipsand coffee. No one smiles. The humdrum ofnon-players’ eyes scream with numbed pain.The driver is short-tempered because thestanding passengers wont move to the backof the bus to allow others on, despite hisrepeated requests to do so.Insight: It takes effort to make room for otherswhen ﬁdgeting in a state of distracteddiscomfort. How to make it easy to make roomfor others who want to ride the public bus?

Grocery StoresOver-processed food laden with sugar andchemicals with names too hard to pronounce aresold by merchants and purchased by consumers.I see young families putting them in their basketsand wonder how ingesting this kind of foodinfluences their moods and activities throughoutthe day. Ingredients for Honey Nut CheeriosHigh ceilings, bright fluorescent lights, linoleumfloor, bored, overweight or acne-faced workers.Analysis: not a healthy place.Insight: This place scares me. Stay away, stay far,far away. How is it that it is legal to sell non-foodas food?

Grocery StoresFirst generation immigrants buyproduce that is not marked. Iwonder what’s in the food theyare taking home, where it comesfrom and under what conditionsit was grown, harvested,transported, processed...What if the food is over-fertilizedor mistreated, or toxic?Insight: How to ensure foodremains 100% health-giving?

Grocery StoresProcessed food labels makehealthful claims though they canhave no bearing on the quality ofthe food product itself.First generation immigrants buythese thinking they are doinggood things for themselves andtheir families.Insight: How to measure fulleffect of believing junk food isnutritious? How to ensure 100%quality food at affordable prices?
