    • GABRIEL – Course/Workshop Immunological methods for epidemiological studies followed by specialized analysis for immunological data Dates: 19-22 November 2007 Location: Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands Organizing committee: Christine Benn (Staten Serum Institue, Denmark) Jeanine Houwing-Duistermaat (Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands) Laura Rodrigues (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom) Hae-Won Uh (Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands) Maria Yazdanbakhsh (Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands)
    • Aim: to teach those interested in epidemiological studies to use simple, standardized, feasible, high capacity and cutting edge techniques to understand the immune system at the cellular and molecular level. First part of the course (19,20th Nov) will consist of audio visually assisted teaching of blood culture methods, FACS and cytokine analysis as well as mRNA isolation for gene expression studies. Teaching material will provide the participants with tools to study Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells in cross sectional or longitudinal studies whereby the data can then be used to understand the effect that exogenous factors have on the development of the immune system. Second part of the course (21,22nd Nov) will focus on data generated from immunoepidemiological studies and how to analyze them. Immunological data have characteristics that need special statistical techniques for appropriate analyses. A data set will be used by participants as an example to explore different methods of analysis. Lectures will be given by experts in the field in the morning and practical sessions on data analysis will be held in the afternoon. Lecturers/Instructors: Immunological methods Data analysis Bart Everts (LUMC) Christine Benn (SSI) Alwin van der Ham (LUMC) Jeanine Houwing (LUMC) Franca Hartgers (LUMC) Nico Nagelkerke (UAEU) Yvonne Kruize (LUMC) Laura Rodrigues (LSHTM) Hermelijn Smits (LUMC) Stijn Vansteelandt (GENTU) Sunny Sapthu (LUMC) Hae-won Uh (LUMC) Erliyani Sartono (LUMC) Maria Yazdanbakhsh (LUMC) Max number of participants: 40 Deadline for GBRIEL members registration: 30th Sept 2007 Information: M.Yazdanbakhsh@lumc.nl (subject : immunology workshop) Registration online: http://www.boerhaavenet.nl/external/inschrijven/userdata.php?id=898&lang=en [Please select GABRIEL member box when it comes to registration page that requests payment- then you will be exempted from payment] Location details: The workshop consists of two days of Immunological Methods (19th and 20th of November 2007) followed by two days of Statistical Analysis of Immuno-epidemiological data (21st and 22nd of November 2007).
