Anger Management

  1. 1. The key to anger reduction is knowing yourself. A match stick has a head but not a brain
  2. 2. Anger – ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’ ??? Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy human emotion. However, when it gets out of control & turns destructive, it can lead to problems in work, problems in personal relationship and problems in overall quality of life. While you have every right to be angry, you must learn to keep that anger in check and use it constructively Being angry or frustrated is just like being under the influence of a drug. It prevents you from rationalizing and thinking logically. Anger is caused by a combination of an irrational perception of reality and a low frustration point.
  3. 3. Work Situation Relationships at work are interdependent, hierarchical & competitive. Keeping the interests of yourself, your boss, your peers, your subordinates, your service providers & your customers, in alignment at all times is difficult. Work place is therefore an environment likely to produce anger. If you manage it well, it can be productive.
  4. 4. Sources of Anger Internal External emotionally misinterpret person makes personal normal events and things attacks against us stress-related anxiety lowers person attacks our ideas our tolerance for frustration demands and unreasonable person threatens our expectations needs We get frustrated person applies a derogatory label
  5. 5. Anger Management Do important jobs now before they become urgent. When you make mistakes, learn from them rather than getting angry. Don't criticize, condemn & complain because it makes you angry.
  6. 6. Choose a job you love and you will not have a day of anger in your working life. Learn to sometimes say NO. .
  7. 7. Ask even stupid questions to avoid mistakes to further avoid others getting angry with you. Organize your mind and organize your desk for six minutes every hour. Nobody can make you angry without your consent.
  8. 8. Accept what you cannot change & Change what you cannot accept. Never get angry with a man who has nothing to lose. Never reply to a letter when you are angry. Say sorry at the right moment “A sincere apology costs nothing to reduce the anger of others. and it’s a smart career move” Indecision makes you angry. Therefore, decide this way or that way.
  9. 9. The most common occupational disease of a poor executive is his inability to listen. The result is anger. Nobody can disgrace us other than ourselves. So why get angry?
  10. 10. Anger is a luxury in which only men of abundant means or absolutely no means can indulge. Never go to bed with an argument unsettled.
  11. 11. Work is the best remedy for all angers. Men who do not know how to fight anger, die young. You cannot change others as easily as you can change yourself. When you want to get things done, use creative ways to remind people as they tend to forget conveniently; this will reduce your anger. Most people remember 20 % of what they hear... understand this fact to reduce your anger.
  12. 12. •Careful with words like ‘NEVER’, ‘ALWAYS’ •e.g. You are always forgetting ; • You never deliver in time. •These words alienate & humiliate people, who might otherwise be willing to work with you on a solution. Share negative emotions, preferably in person or on phone. Emails, notes, are too impersonal for the delicate nature of negative words. What feels like a mild rap on the knuckles when delivered in person feels like a bomb when put in an email or in a note.
  13. 13. Anger is normal reaction & controlled anger can be productive. Introspection (Atma Manthan); Empathy - Putting yourself in other man’s shoes; Pause before a harsh word; ………….. can help. Also remember the other anger management remedies.
  14. 14. Remember No man can think clearly when his fists are clenched. BEAT ANGER, NOT YOURSELF
