BACKGROUNDAs a first worldwide patent, EVO-LED lights are street lights based on LED technology. Theyare very energy efficient and their light is glare-free. This product allows communities toreduce costs for lighting the streets.OBJECTIVESThe aim of the project is to develop and distribute a product which helps communities to saveenergy by replacing older and less efficient technology. Objectives are to obtain generalacceptance for this new technology which results in widespread use. The key strategy is tospecifically target communities of interest and introduce the product and its advantages.PROCESSWith EVO-LED lights, EAST Produktion GmbH follows the aim to substitute old streetlightning system for modern and energy efficient LED technology.Furthermore the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) initiates the national competition“Energy-efficient City Lightning” with the German Development Loan Corporation (KfW-Bank) and German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA).Possible Savings: Model calculation in street lightning with hundred light points: Type of street lightning Energy consumption CO2 emission - kWh/year kg/year (old) mercury steam light, 125 W 54.800 32.800 (new) LED technology, 30 W 12.000 7.200FINANCIAL RESOURCES AND PARTNERSThe EVO-LED lights are financed primarily by the energy supplier, Eon Avacon.Each type of the new lightning system cost approximately 500,- Euro, not including the street
light poles where the EVO-LED will be installed on top of it.RESULTSThe EVO-LED lights have been implemented by several communities and are nowcontributing greatly to save energy costs for these communities.Some communities reported that they can save energy with the new street lightning system;see above table in “Process”.
LESSONS LEARNED AND REPEATABILITYThe Energy use, especially in the area of street lightning, can be reduced by new and modernsystem using the LED-technology. Old conventional street lights spent a lot of energy and didnot meet the state of the art. With a special foil inside the new light system glittering can belimited or avoided. Sometime it is uncomfortable for residents if conventional lights areshining from the streets outside through the windows.
