We spend a lot of time training….feedback is important, listening is important, understanding is important, helping yourself and others succeed. Work Together : Collaboration; motivation ; It takes patience and sometimes humility; in some way shape or form we are interdependent of each other to meet the mission - to be a combat multiplier. Human Dignity and Respect : A work place free of gossip, backstabbing; Free of things that keep people down; be respectful and resolve respectfully. It is also important to listen and understand others. Total Quality Respect. No conditions. High Performance Teams : Same mission and goals…Does the person next to you got your back-----Leave no one behind----Enable don’t Disable----Understand how others learn ---- Develop Talent----Ask Questions---Allow others to ask questions and make suggestions. Diversity of Thought : it takes all backgrounds, all life experiences, All types of skills and abilities….allowing room to grow - It is not just the few items we saw earlier on the Iceberg of Differences! It is much, much more---get past the wrapper that we see and understand the core of a person.
  • After have the class read and process they can (volunteer) share their choices. Lead the discussion with some ideas and thoughts then share… How about you give the keys to the car to your best friend to take the old lady to the hospital and you wait at the bus stop with the woman/man of your dreams…for the next bus?
  • What is Diversity? We define diversity as ‘ all aspects in which people differ '. A person is the sum of all his/her parts! Dimensions of Diversity Often, the different aspects of diversity are divided into primary and secondary dimensions . The primary dimensions are basic and can not be changed by the person. Secondary dimensions can be influenced more easily.
  • Book --The Strong Willed Child A father and daughter went to a basketball game. At half-time the daughter asks if she can join other children on the side of the court and play. The father turns to her and says, 'sure you can honey, but see stay off the court. See that black line that surrounds the court, do not cross that line.' The daughter goes down to the court and... ...mixes with the other children. Then one child crosses the line and begins to shoot at the basket. Then several other children follow. The daughter picks up a loose ball and steps up to the line. She moves her foot ever so close and turns to look up at her father. As soon as he returns the eye contact, she steps across the line. If you strong-willed child wishes to pick a fight...do not disappoint them!
  • Use the PDF file in small groups of about 8-10 people per group and give them 10 minutes to identify people who will remain in the shelter. Let them know at 5 min, 3 min, and 1 min. Possible Debrief Questions How were decisions made?   Who influenced the decisions and how?   What influenced your decisions? Other pressure in the group Quick decisions Well thought out decisions Morals Reason/logic Prejudice Etc.   How was conflict managed?   How did each person feel about the decisions?   What have you learned about the functioning of this group? One last statement… At the end of this activity, we should ask ourselves, not what were we thinking to keep people from the list, but rather…what were we thinking to eliminate people from the list…
  • The 1968 Olympics Black Power salute was a noted black civil rights protest and one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympics. African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos performed the Power to the People salute at the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City.
  • On the morning of October 16, 1968, U.S. athlete Tommie Smith won the 200 meter race in a then-world-record time of 19.83 seconds though he slowed down and raised both arms before crossing the finish line. Australia’s Peter Norman took second with a time of 20.07 seconds, and U.S.'s John Carlos in third place with a time of 20.10 seconds. After the race was completed, the three went to collect their medals at the podium. The two U.S athletes received their medals -- shoeless , but wearing black socks, to represent black poverty . --Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to represent black pride , --Carlos had his tracksuit top unzipped to show solidarity with all blue collar workers in the U.S. -- and wore a necklace of beads which he described "were for those individuals who were lynched, or killed and that no-one said a prayer for, that were hung and tarred . It was for those thrown off the side of the boats in the middle passage.” --All three athletes wore Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) badges. As all three athletes approached the podium, Norman asked what they were doing and they shared their message. He was so moved by their story, he asked if he could show support for their ideals and wear one of the badges. The got one from another athlete. Both U.S. athletes intended on bringing black gloves to the event, but Carlos forgot his, leaving them in the Olympic Village. It was Peter Norman, who suggested Carlos wear Smith's left-handed glove , this being the reason behind him raising his left hand, as opposed to his right. When “The Star-Spangled Banner" played, Smith and Carlos delivered the salute with heads bowed, a gesture which became front page news around the world. As they left the podium they were booed by the crowd. Smith later said "If I win, I am American, not a black American. But if I did something bad, then they would say I am a Negro. We are black and we are proud of being black. Black America will understand what we did tonight.”
  • The International Olympic Committee Chairman acted immediately in response to their actions, he ordered Smith and Carlos suspended from the U.S. team and banned from the Olympic Village. When the US Olympic Committee refused, they threatened to ban the entire US track team. This threat led to the two athletes being expelled from the Games. THEY WERE STRIPPED OF THEIR MEDALS.
  • Smith and Carlos were largely ostracized by the U.S. sporting establishment in the following years and in addition were subject to criticism of their actions. Time magazine showed the five-ring Olympic logo with the words, "Angrier, Nastier, Uglier", instead of "Faster, Higher, Stronger". Back home they were subject to abuse and they and their families received death threats. Smith continued in athletics, going on to play in the NFL, before becoming an assistant professor of Physical Education at Oberlin College. In 1995 he went on to help coach the U.S. team at the World Indoor Championships at Barcelona. In 1999 he was awarded a Sportsman of the Millennium award. He is now a public speaker. Carlos' career followed a similar path to Smith. He initially continued in athletics, equaling the 100 yard dash world record the following year. Later he played in the NFL. Norman, who was sympathetic to his competitors' protest, was reprimanded by his country's Olympic authorities and ostracized by the Australian media. He was not picked for the 1972 Summer Olympics, despite finishing third in his trials. He kept running, but contracted gangrene in 1985 after tearing his Achilles tendon, which nearly led to his leg being amputated. Depression and heavy drinking followed. He suffered a heart attack and died on October 3, 2006. Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON OUR EDUCATION (LEVEL ), OUR SOCIALIZATION , OUR EXPERIENCES AND BEHAVIORS …AND LETS NOT FORGET VALUES TOO.   WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO SPEED UP? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO SLOW DOWN? *Remember that at this point you know little to nothing about them other then what they just did. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THEIR SITUATION? NOTHING, SO…   … WE GO IN AND FILL IN THE BLANKS WITH?   How we present ourselves to our students (and possibly parents/co-workers) impacts whether they will buy into our teaching and respect our instruction. IF YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT THAT…YOU ARE FOOLISH.

  • The last man of this forlorn group did naught except for gain Giving only to those who gave was how he played the game. The logs held tight in death's still hands was proof of human sin. They didn't die from the cold without, they died from --- THE COLD WITHIN .
  • If you have a 40 penny nail and a bucket of water…and you place the nail on top of the water what happens? Now heat the nail to red hot…and place it on top of the water…what happens? It sinks…still! Now wrap that nail in Styrofoam and tape and seal it up…now place the nail on top of the bucket of water…what happens? The nail does not float, the Styrofoam floats…the nail ASSUMES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GREATER MASS. The greater mass is…everyone working together for the success of the students, school, and providing a safe environment.

Giving When it Counts...  There was a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease.  Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness.  The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.  He hesitated for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her."  As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as did the whole family…seeing the color returning to her cheeks...Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".  Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.  For the understanding of diversity in the workforce …it is important to not misunderstand what our roles are…each and everyone of us!

A waitress put a glass of water in Front of him. &amp;quot;How much is an ice cream sundae?&amp;quot; he asked.  &amp;quot;Fifty cents,&amp;quot; replied the waitress.  The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it... &amp;quot;Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?&amp;quot; he inquired.  By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.  &amp;quot;Thirty-five cents,&amp;quot; she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. &amp;quot;I&apos;ll have the plain ice cream,&amp;quot; he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left.  When the waitress came back, there… placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.  You see, he couldn&apos;t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.
