  • Honoke`ā is a valley in the center of Pololū &amp; Waipi`o. It marks the boundary between Kohala &amp; Hāmākua. Very few visitors because of the extremely steep valley balls.
  • Ka makani wehe lau nui o Laupāhoehoe – The coconut leaf lifting wind of Laupāhoehoe Ka ua Wa`a`wa`ahia o Waipi`o – The rain of Waipi`o sweeps along the gullies and gulches as it pours Ka ua kīhene lehua o Hāmākua – The rain that produces lehua clusters of Hāmākua
  • Also, a play on kihi loa. A native of Hāmākua is said to avoid meeting strangers. Because of bashfulness or disinclination to share his possessions, he will turn aside (kihi) and go a long way away (loa)
