  • Hello Zappos!\n
  • I'm very happy to come up here to talk to you about the Tech Library that we're building downtown called /usr/lib. Calling it a tech library falls a little short of the mark since there’s a lot more to it than that, but that description kind of stuck and it’s not annoyingly long. First off, there aren’t only technical books.\n\n
  • Second, it’s not just a library. The way I like to think about it is that we’re building a really cool downtown hangout for creative, entrepreneurial & technically minded people to come to work and mingle. It’s really an “if you build it, they will come” type idea and we’re hoping that by providing a valuable resource & meetup spot, we can help to foster serendipitous interactions and make cool things happen. So, there are basically three parts to /usr/lib:\n
  • You could have guessed that there’s going to be an actual library. We’re going to kick start the collection with 1000 dead tree books. Why dead tree books? Because they’re physical, easily browsable, and they bring physical people in. We’ll be looking into electronic books and videos later on as well though. We’re focusing the library on a few primary categories:\n
  • Technical - for things like programming languages, welding techniques or nuclear physics. If you want to learn how to do something, or just stop by and use these as a reference while you work, this is for you.\n
  • Hi, Lenny. Sorry about this. Anyway, there’ll be a book signing in the lobby.\n
  • Business and Strategy: how to start or run your business, how to exceed at customer service, how to deal with people etc. This part is very similar to the aim of the Zappos library in the lobby, but you know.. bigger.\n
  • Inspirational - biographies of remarkable people and companies, more than a few music and art books. Basically, if you’re looking for ideas or to get motivated, this is your thing.\n
  • and also some technologically relevant romance novels. Because everyone could use a little more love in their lives.\n\n..jokes only.\n\n
  • Though we’re starting with those three categories, we’re really hoping that our future direction will be guided by our patrons and we have a suggestion form for you to fill out on usrlib.org. I’d love to hear what books and resources you all think we should have.\n\n
  • The second part of /usr/lib is a casual coworking environment. On the main floor will be some long tables with power jacks, comfortable chairs, wifi, whiteboards, giant bean bags etc. It’s not meant to be a long term office like the actual coworking space others are working on, but we welcome anyone to stop by for a few hours or a half day, order some coffee from downstairs and get some work done alone or with friends.\n
  • Finally, there is a large meeting room in the back with a projector, ample seating and table space. It’ll be open for members to reserve for their events, community classes, local meetup groups, movie nights and so on. The reservation system will be online, searchable, and we hope to become a popular venue for smaller events and meetups.\n\n
  • Still with me? Good. We have an excellent location. We’re leasing a space on the second floor of the Emergency Arts building.\n
  • That’s right above The Beat coffee shop, which is already a bit of a tech hub and community hotspot downtown thanks in part to great community events like the VegasJelly. We have an exciting agreement worked out with our friendly downstairs neighbors too, so The Beat staff will be helping us oversee the library and you’ll even be able to call downstairs and order some tasty beverages and they’ll bring them up for you.\n\n
  • But wait! What’s a Jelly? I’ll tell you. It’s a meetup for tech oriented people to come hang out, work and collaborate. The one here is organized by Dylan Bathurst at the Beat every other Thursday. Why is it called a Jelly? IONO. Tech events have odd names.. we’ve also got ignites, and launchups and trampolines and gerbilmoots.\n

  • The library will be under card key access and all Zappos employees will be able to badge in with their employee id’s. Anyone else who would like to be a member can apply online and we’ll provide them a special library-only access card.\n
  • We’re planning to be open as early as the end of September and look forward to you visiting us soon! \n
  • I’d like to thank all of our volunteers from within Zappos and Vegas tech scene, some of them are visiting us here today. A huge thank you to Tony and Zappos for sponsoring /usr/lib as a downtown community project.\n
