Is Satan Bound? This issue is central to the Amillennial view refuting a literal 1,000 year millennium kingdom.
“ And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be set free for a short time”.
Satan is deceiving the nations
2 Cor.11:14, masquerades as angel of light.
2 Thess. 2:9-12, counterfeit miracles, signs deceiving those who are perishing.
2 Cor. 4:3-4, “god of this age has blinded the eyes of unbelievers.”
Eph.2:2, “ruler of the kingdom of the air”.
John 12:31, “the prince of this world”.
The Real Reality
The nations are not any less deceived since the spiritual kingdom age has started.
Worldwide morality has not been changed since the coming of Jesus and Holy Spirit.
Individual lives have been changed but the nations are still deceived.
We are not ruling the world with righteousness, until Christ returns.
1 John 5:119, “the whole world is under the control of the evil one”.
Ephesians 2:2, “the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.”
2 Tim. 2:26, “taken captive to do his will.”
1 Peter 5:8, “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”
Christians at war with Satan
Ephesians 6:10-16, we fight against the devil’s schemes, fiery arrows, and his spiritual forces of evil in heavenly realms.
James 4:7,“Resist the devil and he will flee”
1 Thess. 2:18, Paul resisted by Satan.
1 Thess. 3:5, the tempter of the saints.
Saints can give Satan foothold
Eph. 4:27, warned about giving a foothold.
When we stop submitting to God and allow sin to control us.
Acts 5:3, with Ananias and Sapphira, “Satan has so filled your heart that you lied”
2 Cor. 2:11, threat Satan might “outwit us”.
Satan can still torment
2 Cor. 12:7, Paul had “a messenger of Satan, to torment me”.
1 Tim 1:20, those with “shipwrecked faith” are “handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme”. (Hymenaeus and Alexander)
1 Cor. 5:5, “hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed”.
Satan Driven Out
Acts 26:18, “to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God”. (at conversion)
John 12:31, “Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the prince of this world is driven out”. (in the lives of believers)
John 16:11, “and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned”. (At conversion Holy Spirit does this).
Luke 10:18, the analogy of “Satan fall like lightening” figuratively at our conversion.
Satan a defeated foe
1 John 4:4, “Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world”.
Col. 2:15, “And having disarmed the powers and authorities…triumphing over them by the cross”.
2 Cor. 10:4, “The weapons we fight with are not of this world…divine power to demolish strongholds”.
Satan in Heaven
Initially guardian cherub on the Mount of God, second in position of power (Ezekiel 28:16b).
Initial battle in heavenly realms described in Rev. 12:3-5, “an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.”
This defeat occurred before “the woman” or Israel gave birth to “a child” or Jesus (Rev. 12:4b-5).
Satan’s Access to Heaven
Job 1:7-12, “The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.” Satan accused Job before God.
Rev. 12:10, shows that Satan is still “the accuser of the brethren.”
Satan’s Access in Tribulation
Zech. 3:1-2, “the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, ‘The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord rebuke you” Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire.” See also Zech. 13:9.
Amos 4:11, “You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me.” Nation Israel in end times (Mal. 3:2).
Satan and Michael at War
Jude 9 discusses Michael’s dispute with Satan over the body of Moses, many years after the initial fall of Lucifer.
Dan. 12:1, “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of great distress”
2 Thess. 2:5-8 discusses the restraining force against Satan- that is Michael.
Dan. 8:10-12, “It grew until it reached the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth and trampled on them. It set itself up to be as great as the Prince of the host; it took away the daily sacrifice from him and the place of the sanctuary was brought. Because of the rebellion, the host of the saints and daily sacrifice were given over to it.”
Satan’s Second Heavenly Defeat
Rev. 12:7-9, “And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down- that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth and his angels with him.”
Satan’s Access Lost-5 th Trumpet
Rev. 9:1-2+11, “The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace…They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon,, and in Greek, Apollyon.”
Rev. 12:12, “Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”
Satan tries to the Jews in the desert of Petra, but God protected them and Satan then made war against “the rest of her offspring”
Rev. 12:10, Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: ‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night has been hurled down.”
Christ’s 2 nd Coming-7 th Trumpet
Rev. 11:15, “The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.” (Notice similarity of Rev. 12:10.)
Satan’s First Earthly Defeat
Rev. 19:19-20, “Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. But the beast was captured and with him the false prophet…The two of them were thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.”
Rev. 6:8, “Death and Hades”, “pale horse”.
Rev. 20:1-3, “And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations”
Rev. 20:7-8, “When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth-Gog and Magog-to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore.”
Satan’s Final Defeat
Rev. 20:9-10, “They marched across the breath of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented”
In the highest heavens when Satan tried to usurp God’s authority-no longer on Mount.
In the lower heavenly realms at the 5 th trumpet.
In the Battle of Armageddon, where the 7 th bowl judgment takes place. (Rev.16:17-21.)
In the final battle where fire is used as judgment, as apposed to the winepress.
