1. RESCUE TOGETHER
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

3. INTRODUCTION
• Create an action plan to rescue pets and owners
together.
• Community action plan is needed.
• Promote pet friendly shelters.
• Avoid separation stress.

4. BACKGROUND
• Human and animals are family.
• Separation will cause trauma and will affect the
evacuation process during an emergency.
• In fact, pet owners refuse to evacuate because they
don’t want to leave their pets behind.

8. STATEMENT OF NEED
• Around 200.000 animals were displaced after Hurricane
Katrina.
• Pets and owners were psychologically impacted.
• Pet and owner survivors experienced different levels of
negative psychological sequels associated with property
damage and personal injury.

9. STATEMENT OF NEED
• Washington State does not have an action plan that includes
owners and pets in natural disasters.

10. STATEMENT OF NEED
• Washington State has an action plan to keep pets separate from
owners.
• We cannot wait until a natural disaster occurs in our county
without an evacuation plan that keeps owners and pets together.
• This is a real problem that involves all the community members
who are pet owners.

11. PROPOSED PROJECT
• Educational campaign at the pet owner’s neighborhood.
• Partnership with the Seattle Human Society, the ASPCA, and
PAWS to provide instructor training on Pet First Aid applicable in
case of emergency.
• Rescue teams need to have enough supplies to provide first aid
to people and pets.

12. OUTCOMES
• The estimated duration of this project is around a 12
month period.
• Providing a total of 104 hours of training.
• The types of training:
- Instructors,
once a week (Tuesday) for one year. (52 hours)
- Community pet owners,
once a week (Thursday) for one year. (52 hours)

13. OUTCOMES
• I expect to recruit two volunteers who will work part
time during the year to do clerical work,
telemarketing, and record data; this includes
telephone use, office supplies, transportation, drinks,
and snacks.
• 2 volunteers working 40 hours every week for 52
weeks total 2080 hours.

14. CONCLUSION
•We want to commit with 2181 hours of
volunteer work to complete this community
project.
•Start initiative to pass a Rescue Together law in
King County.
•Prevent traumas for owners and pets.
