MOOC IS A MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE LEARNING
COURSE, WHICH HAS AN OPEN ACCESS AND
ALLOWS INTERACTIVE LEARNING FOR
LEARNERS ALL OVER THE WORLD.
HISTORY OF MOOC
DISTANCE LEARNING TOOK PLACE AFTER THE
INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, IN EUROPE AND THE
UNITED KINGDOM.
HISTORY CONTINUES…
DISTANCE LEARNING WAS IN A FORM OF
POSTS AND THE POST SERVICES WERE
BECOMING MORE ACCESSIBLE AND
RELAIBLE. THEN AS TIME WENT ON
LEAENING PROGRAMS WERE DEVELOPED
FROM MEDIA PLATFORMS SUCH AS TV AND
RADIO.

IN 2008 A TURN OF EVENTS HAPPENED.
STEPHEN DOWNES AND GEORGE SIEMENS
TOOK MOOC TO ANOTHER LEVEL.
CONNECTIVISM
STEPHEN AND SIEMENS SAW THE NEED FOR
INTERACTIVE LEARNING, AS OPPOSED TO
PASSIVE LEARNING WHICH TV AND RADIO
PROVIDED. SO WHAT DID THEY DO ABOUT THAT
GAP?
CONNECTIVISM CONTINUES…

• THE TWO EDUCATORS DEVELOPED AN ELEARNING PLATFORM ON THE WEB THAT
ENABLED LEARNERS, EDUCATORS,
PROFESSORS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC ALL
OVER THE WORLD TO LEARN FROM
CONNECTING WITH ONE ANOTHER. HENCE,
THE CONCEPT CONNECTIVISM WAS BORN,
AND THE REST FOLLOWED.
ADVANTAGES OF MOOC

MOOC ENABLES LEARNERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO
SHARE A COMMON PLATFORM OF KNOWLEDGE.

INTERACTIONS OF STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD,
MEANS ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM ALL OVER THE
WORLD AND AT THE TIPS OF YOUR OWN HANDS.

LEARNING AT THE CONVINIENCE OF YOUR HOME OR
COUNTRY, ETC

• The information could not always be correct that is

THE ULTIMATE ADVANTAGE OF MOOC

• There are no costs involved, however the getting
educated is the ultimate advantage.
MY CAREER

• I am a pre-service mathematics and life sciences
teacher. These two subjects are my majors at
University of Johannesburg. I intend on using
MOOC for online courses that will better equip me
as a professional mathematics teacher one day.
MOOC will also be a great technological tool for
many uses.
USES OF MOOC IN MY CLASSROOM
• SUPPLEMENTARY LEARNING
• HOMEWORK AND ASSIGNMENTS CAN BE GIVEN FROM MOOC
• FOR PRESCRIPTION PURPOSES TO FURTHER THE
KNOWLEGDE OF COLLEGUES IN THE SAME SUBJECT AREA,
FOR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AS WELL
