than standing up at the podium doing the eulogy!

• ONLY 7% of the meaning in our words is derived from the
actual spoken words during the presentation.
• 38% of the meaning in our words are derived from HOW the
words are said.
• 55% of the meaning is in our words is derived from facial
expressions. – BODY LANGUAGE
FACTS 3:
• Public Speaking or presentation is a WHOLE BODY affair:
• Head: know our stuff.
• Mouth: Speak clearly, slowly, and with great expression so
our audience can understand and engage with what we
are saying.
• Hands: gestures to emphasize what we are saying
• Legs: don’t cross our legs, sway or shuffle while speaking
less we will appear nervous or disinterested.
• Back: Stand up straight – appear professional and alert.

• Ears: Listen to the mood of the audience. Adjust our
expression accordingly.
• Eyes: Make consistent contact with our audience. This will
help engage them and make them feel like we really are
talking to them.

1. To boost your CONFIDENCE during our next presentation
OPEN OUR CHEST AND ARMS & KEEP OUR BACK
STRAIGHT. This position will make us BREATH BETTER
and we’ll FEEL MORE RELAXED.
2. SMILE! To make your audience comfortable simply SMILE
at them. Smiling is the most powerful weapon!
3. To ENGAGE people, GESTURE with our Arms & Hands in a
NATURAL way, and LOOK our audience IN THE EYE. People
tend to naturally PAY ATTENTION and People tend to
naturally PAY ATTENTION and like people who look them
in the eye.
4. To demonstrate AUTHORITY, KEEP CALM and use small
and stiff gestures This way people will TRUST YOU and
view you as A CONFIDENT PERSON.

5. To bring movement to your speech, use the physical
space you have available and WALK IT. For example, if
you’re presenting three points, talk about a point when
you’re at at FIRST POSITION, then move out 2 or 3 steps
and talk about Point B; This way, a movement that
includes space will accompany your SPEECH. (Use of
Space/ stage)
6. VARY OUR GESTURES through out the presentation. Open
gestures, Small gestures, gestures that involves our
HEAD, ARMS & HANDS, gestures that involves only hands,
or only our head, broad gestures.
7. To draw attention to a certain element of the
presentation, POINT DIRECTLY at it & LOOK at it on the
screen. AT THE SAME TIME our audience will follow our
eyes and fingers.
8. To encourage audience participation, USE OPEN GESTURES
and if possible WALK AROUND AND TOWARD PEOPLE. We
tend to participate more when we have proximity to a
speaker.
9. To make a hard questions seem easier PAUSE, BREATHE
SLOWLY (this will give us time to think… and then…)
ANSWER WHILE LOOKING THE QUESTIONER IN THE EYE.
10. To make our audience buy our story, USE POSITIVE
GESTURES during the entire presentation: NODDING,
OPEN GESTURES, SMILING, MIRRORING, etc.

GUIDELINE FOR OUTLINING AN INFORMATIVE SPEECH
The following outline shows how one student outlined an informative
speech. The transcript of the sample speech follows the outline. Notice
how the speech includes the following:
* Attention-getting opener
* Preview
* Body
* Summary
* Memorable concluding Remarks
Also, notice how transitions have been used to connect the components.
* ATTENTION-GETTING OPENER *
Every student in this room has something in common with famous
astronauts, Olympic athletes, actors, politicians, and business
executives. It's a common affliction that causes pain, suffering, and
distress. Can you guess what it is? I'll tell you. It's called stage fright.
* PREVIEW *
Today we will be learning four major facts about stage fright.

I. Physical symptoms
II. Causes
III. Famous people who have had stage fright
IV. Solutions
TRANSITION: OK, let's get started on our investigation of stage fright by
first looking at its six major symptoms.
* BODY *
I. Physical symptoms of stage fright
a. Rapid breathing
b. Rapid heart rate
c. Dry mouth
d. Butterflies in the stomach
e. Increased perspiration
f. Trembling hands
TRANSITION: Now you understand the symptoms of stage fright. Let's
continue our investigation by examining the causes of stage fright.
II. Causes of stage fright

c. Being disliked
d. Lack of confidence about language skills
TRANSITION: Now you are aware of some of the causes of stage
fright. Let's continue our inquiry into stage fright by looking at a few
famous people who have suffered from this affliction.
Students and ordinary people aren't the only ones who suffered from

stage fright. There have been many famous people of many different
nationalities who have had stage fright.
Winston Churchill was the prime minister of England during World War
II. He once said that he thought there was a block of ice in his stomach
each time he made a speech. Julio Iglesias, the famous Spanish singer,
has revealed in interviews that he is nervous about his pronunciation
when speaking English. Jane Fonda, the well-known American actress,
has admitted to having a tremendous fear when facing an audience. And
last but not least, Olivia Newton-John, the famous Australian singer and
actress, has admitted to shaking and crying before a performance.
TRANSITION: As you can see, you are in good company with famous
people who have had stage fright. Now let's investigate what you can do
to overcome this common problem.
The good news is that there are some ways to help you relax and reduce
the amount of stage fright you feel. There are some temporary solutions
and some permanent solutions.
A very good temporary or short-term solution to stage fright is to be
thoroughly prepared for a presentation. Practice your speech or
performance many times. This will help you feel more confident. It is a
good idea to take your time before you begin to speak. Gently place your
notes on the speaker's stand. Be sure to look at your audience before
you begin. When you see them looking at you with interest and giving
you encouraging nods, you will feel much better. Take several deep
breaths before you begin. This will also help calm your nerves a little.
A more permanent or long-term solution is to remember that stage fright
is perfectly normal. Almost everyone experiences stage fright, and you
are not alone in feeling this way. Look for opportunities to practice in

front of groups. Get as much experience as possible. The more
experience you get, the less nervous you will begin to feel. A final long-
term solution is to talk about stage fright with friends. Talking about your
fears with others can be very helpful.
