Ships in Kilcummin Whether you arrive by land or by sea, come to Kilcummin and watch the flagship of the Irish navy, LE Eithne and a flotilla of other vessels as they take part in a spectacular and symbolic re-enactment of General Humbert’s landing in 1798. Soldiers, sailors, rebels and much, much more! Kilcummin LA PRISE DE KILLALA: Battle of Killala Re-enactment Battle explodes onto Killala’s historic streets as the‘First Battle of Killala’is dramatically played out. Watch enthralled as scores of heavily armed redcoats, blue-clad French soldiers, ferocious pikemen and women battle their way through the smoke of booming cannon, the crack of muskets, the clash of pike and sword, all amid the echo of bugles and drums, in this authentic re-enactment of the events of 1798. Free, family-friendly entertainment. Followed by General Humbert’s Victorious Address Town Centre 6.00pm LOCAL MUSICAL CELEBRATION Main Stage 9.00pm BANQUET DE LA VICTOIRE: Victory Banquet 1798 style Sit at the long tables with the victorious for an authentic 3 course banquet proudly showcasing the areas local produce. Bards, singers and musicians will provide the heritage atmosphere. Tickets €17.98. Community Centre Sunday 18th August 12 noon MATCH DE FOOT Football match 1798 style. Madness and mayhem abound as up to 60 French, English and Irish take to the pitch in an attempt to win football glory! The Mall All day ’98 RECALLED EXHIBITION A unique exhibition of distinctive and previously unseen artefacts (many from private collections) relating to the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland and General Humbert’s expedition in particular. Admission free. The Linenhall Arts Centre Sunday 18th August 11.00am L’ACCUEIL DE LAHARDANE: Lahardane welcomes the French General Humbert and his Franco-Irish army rested in Lahardane on their historic march to Castlebar. Come out and support the uniformed French re-enactors and Irish pikemen as they mark this occasion with a formal dedication ceremony to all the men and women involved in 1798 Lahardane 11.00am RACES OF CASTLEBAR 10K Followed by a‘Battle Barbeque’leaving participants ready for the re-enactment of‘The Races of Castlebar’ Starts/finishes at the new Tennis Club All day 10am – 6pm LA FÊTE: Victorian Carnival & Vintage Day Helter Skelter!..... Admission free The Linenhall Arts Centre LA GRANDE VICTOIRE: The Races of Castlebar Re-enactment A once in a lifetime opportunity to see history being expertly recreated and dramatically brought to life on the streets of Castlebar, just as it happened in 1798. First a fife and drum band sets the beat as they lead the Redcoats through the town. A clatter of iron shod hooves will ring throughout Main Street as a mounted sentry announces the French arrival from his charger. Watch as the Irish Pikemen and French soldiers come into view, see the redcoats chased down the historic Staball Hill, hear the crackle of muskets, the boom and bellow of cannon, the clash of steel sword and pikes, as the battle commences in earnest. Watch in awe as the French army supported by Pikemen advance, retreat and advance again up the Main Street. Cheer the final victory near Christ Church and enjoy the final action as the redcoats race from the town-hence the name‘The Races of Castlebar’. Commemorative dedication at John Moore / French Monuments Then, join with the dignitaries at a dedication and remembrance ceremony for those from all sides who participated in the Rebellion of 1798. Musical extravaganza featuring the cream of Irish talent including Fergal O Murchu, John Spillane & Dessie O Halloran and more.
