  • 1. What do the terms birth rate and death rate mean? What factors influence them?
  • 2. The birth rate is the number of live births for every 1000 people.
  • 3. This means that if a country had a birth rate of 20 and a population of 10 000, then 200 babies would be born that year
  • 4. The term death rate is the number of people who die each year for every 1000 people.
  • 5. NATURAL INCREASE OR DECREASE • If birth rate is higher than death rate then there will be an increase in the population. • If death rate is higher than birth rate then there will be a decrease in the population.
  • 6. What causes a high birth rate in LEDCs? • Lack of contraception. • Religious beliefs. • The need for help on the farm to make more money. • Several children die young.
  • 7. What causes a low birth rate in MEDCs? • Wide use of contraception. • Education, particularly women. • Later marriage. • Selfishness.
  • 8. How can education of women lead to low birth rates? If girls don’t stay on at school they have no qualifications and have difficulty getting a job They get married early They have lots of children because they do not intend to work If girls gain a degree they often go on to get a good job This often leads to a career They get married much later They probably have only one child and then carry on with their career
  • 9. What factors lead to high and low death rates? • High death rates • Low death rates • Few doctors • Many doctors • Poor sanitation • Good sanitation • Lack of food • Good diet • Inadequate housing • Good housing
