Anticyclones

  1. 1. Anticyclones • A high pressure system with weather dominated by stable conditions • They only have one type of air mass which covers a large area and does not have any fronts • Air is descending • Cloud formation prevented • Winds blow in clockwise direction • Isobars widely spaced and winds often quite light
  2. 2. Summer Anticyclones • • • • Very little cloud Dry with light winds Sun high in the sky, so hot and sunny Cloudless evening skies allow heat to escape, so nights can be cool • Early morning dew and mist • Risk of thunderstorms at the end of ‘heatwave’ conditions
  3. 3. Winter conditions • Dry and bright with very little cloud • Sun low in the sky, so cold conditions • Clear evening skies mean that nights can be very cold • Early morning frost and fog may last all day • Extensive low cloud or fog may produce overcast or ‘gloomy’ conditions.
