Cooperative and collaborative learning in virtual environments

  1. 1. Cooperative andcollaborative learning in virtual environments Magdalena Anzor magdanzor@yahoo.com.ar
  2. 2. Distance Learning (DL) mediated by ICTs• Constructivist perspective• Practical rationalization• Situated and distributed knowledge construction• Building on previous knowledge (scaffolding)
  3. 3. Historic background• Industrial model based on work division – mass production – emphasis on the results (50´-60´”fordism”)• Autonomy and independance of students – exclusion of the teacher from the system (70´ distance universities-behaviourism- multimedia learning pack)• Interaction and communication – situated learning (80´onwards)
  4. 4. Situated learning based on:• Practical rationalization which priviledges “doing” rather than “results”• Knowledge acquisition and what is done in it – the result is a consequence of the process
  5. 5. The process implies:• Interaction with the rest of students. i.e.: priviledged space for social construction of knowledge through cooperative and collaborative learning• Work rationalized from a constructivist perspective (not with a utilitarian character)• At present DL implies using ICTs - Internet
  6. 6. Democratic aspect• Social need to bring education close to those places with difficult acces to it.• Education for everybody in equality of conditions
(Litwin 2005; 9)
