    • A Lesson on Fractions Using Kids OLR Software EDEL 518A Software Integration Spring 2014 Kailen Whang Caroline Llewellyn Madeline Maradiegue
    • Analysis Caroline Llewellyn’s Fifth Period Math Class
    • Caroline Llewellyn’s Fifth Period Math Class Caroline’s class consists of… 15 high school students with various disabilities who require specialized academic instruction in math.
    • The class is taught by a special education teacher and supported by two paraprofessionals.
    • All 15 students have unique learning profiles with various skills and needs. The non-homogenous group consists of students with the following disabilities: Fragile X Syndrome Downs Syndrome Autism Intellectual Disabilities Speech and Language Impairments ADHD Cerebral Palsy Traumatic Brain Injury Emotional Disabilities Additionally, five of the fifteen students are English language learners.
    • In order to meet the group’s various needs, a universally designed lesson will be created and include specifically designed academic instruction in English.
    • Development A Lesson on Fractions Using Kids OLR Fractions Software
    • Given the diverse needs of the students, it was clear the lesson must include…  a review of previously learned material  an anticipatory set  direct instruction  differentiated instruction  guided practice  independent practice  various modalities in order for all students to access the curriculum  a quick assessment
    • Differentiating Learning Two students with the most significant academic challenges will be placed at the side table with a paraprofessional to support their learning and provide concrete manipulatives (blocks, paper cut outs and 2 iPads). Two more advanced students will be allowed to progress through the Kids Fraction OLR software at the desktop computers in the back of the room. The remaining students will be at their individual seats, but be asked to move their desks with their partner during the guided practice section of the lesson using Screen Chomp on iPads.
    • The lesson will be a part of a math unit on fractions which will be later generalized into functional skills such as money, measurement and cooking. Target Content Standard Common Core Geometry 2.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.CA Common Core State Standars: Mathematics A lesson on a lower content standard will be a helpful building block for high school geometry standards.

    • Implementation A Lesson on Fractions
    • A Lesson on Fractions Caroline’s students had some background with Kids Fraction OLR, so it was an appropriate software to use as a supplement to this lesson on understanding what numerators and denominators are.
    • The OLR software plays a pivotal part in capturing student’s attention and differentiating learning. One teacher computer with the images displayed via the projector incorporates the Kids OLR software into the lesson plan. Capturing Their Attention
    • Guided Practice After the video, the class worked through practice examples together.
    • Students in partner groups used Screen Chomp on iPads to erase, draw, and color their fractions within a circle.
    • Higher performing students were allowed to do independent work by continuing with the Kids Fraction OLR website lessons, and the students who needed more guidance were provided manipulatives at the side table. A student works independently on Kids OLR.
    • Assessment Success! The students were engaged during the lesson. All students identified what a numerator and denominator is by writing a unit fraction and/or discussing the definition with 100% accuracy in at least 1 of 5 opportunities as measured by observations from the teacher through the lesson. To further assess mastery of content the “ticket out the door” was completed by 12/14 students, along with 83% accuracy during the end of the lesson.
    • Lesson Evaluation Meeting the Needs of Diverse Students
    • Providing Multiple Means of Representation, Action and Engagement The video clip repeated scenes of the equal parts of a pizza. This was a way to help students visualize the concept of one part of a whole unit. Using different mediums for instruction (Kids OLR, Screen Chomp, manipulatives) was helpful for the students and differentiated the lesson. It allowed all students to grasp the concept in whatever manner was easiest for them.
    • Providing learners with manipulatives helped reinforce the idea and allowed them to visualize and touch equal parts of a shape. Working through practice examples first, then having students work in pairs facilitated comprehension and analysis. The lesson was fairly fast paced so that students would not lose interest and their attention could be kept on task. Providing Multiple Means of Representation, Action and Engagement
    • A Place for Improvement If there was anything that could to be changed, it would be to empower the paraeducator to check for comprehension on the Screen Chomp activity. At times, the students were waiting for the teacher to check their work. Mrs. Llewellyn could have increased on task time by effectively utilizing her paraeducator.
    • Teamwork Evaluation Our team members worked together to create, design, implement and evaluate our lesson. Maddie came up with the idea of of designing a lesson around the fraction software Kids OLR. We decided to use Caroline’s classroom as she has many unique learners and flexibility to implement the universally designed lesson. Together, we all created and designed our lesson to incorporate technology in a meaningful way while meeting the unique needs within the classroom. Caroline headed up the implementation of the lesson and differentiating the instruction to meet her students needs. Kailen took charge of evaluating and reflecting on the lesson and finding ways to improve our skills. Finally, Maddie put all of our pieces together to create a cohesive report. Overall, our group worked very well together on our instructional design
