Collaborative consumption What is it? – The term used to describe an economic model based on sharing, swapping, bartering, trading or renting access to products as opposed to ownership. – The idea itself is not new – ie. libraries, laundrettes etc. Why is it important? – New technology is making the concept possible on a scale never seen before. – Good examples are marketplaces such as eBay, social lending (Zopa), peer-to-peer travel (CouchSurfing, Airbnb) and car sharing (Zipcar or peer-to-peer RelayRides). – It is reinventing not just what people consume, but how they consume it!
