  8. 8. Methods and rituals •He obtained his victims easily, as he was a police deputy. •He would usually pick up the girls while they were hitch hiking. •He would bound them to a tree then rape them before killing them. •He would always keep the victims jewelry.
  9. 9. Getting caught• While on patrol he picked up two teenage girls, whowere hitchhiking. He took them to some remotewoods and tired them to a tree and threatened to killthem or sell them as prostitute however he got a callon his police radio and had to leave them there butplaned to return. The girls escaped and went to thepolice. Gerard told the police he was just trying toteach the girls a lesson about hitchhiking. They didnot believe him and he was stripped him of his badgeand charged with false imprisonment and assault.

Getting caught•After posting bail, Schaefer was released.Two months later, on September 27, 1972,Schaefer abducted, tortured, andmurdered Susan Place, and GeorgiaJessup,and buried them on Hutchinson Island.•The police got a search warrant for hishome and found lurid stories he hadwritten that were full of descriptions ofthe torture, rape and murder of women
  11. 11. Charges•Schaefer was charged with themurders of Place and Jessup. InOctober 1973, he was found guilty andgiven two life sentences.•Authorities soon stated that he waslinked to around 30 missing womenand girls.
  12. 12. Death•On December 3, 1995,Schaefer was foundstabbed to death in hiscell. He had been killedby fellowinmate VincentRivera.
